Eunos CAT (MOT failure)
Discussion
Technically its failed due to the emissions, not the cat, per se.
A 94 import car in good health should fly through the emissions check, with or without a catalytic converter.
First find out whats written on the V5. Then find out which actual emissions check they garage have completed.
I'd be extremely suspect of what they've told you in this situation to be honest.
Its also well documented that buying cheap aftermarket Catalytic converters is dodgy ground too with most of the being rubbish. if you WERe going ahead with replacing it I'd be more inclined to go with a 2nd hand OEM Mazda one from a breakers.
But then, as above, it should pass the test without anyway, IF its actually being put through the correct test in the first place.

Should a 94 JDM Eunos need a cat? Our 95 1.8 JDM Eunos track car doesn't have a cat and sails through MOTs.

Anything post 93 isn't it lazza? You must have a friendly MOT tester
Ignore me, my poor brain isn't working well today. Our track car is a L reg 93 JDM 1.6

A Eunos registered or first used in Japan on or before 31 July 1995 should be subject to the Basic Emissions Test (3.5% CO). As long as you are under 3.5% CO it should pass.
Ask the MOT tester to show you the relevant VDS in the emissions database that matches your chassis number beginning NA8C- (he won't find one in a month of Sundays which means he has to perform the Basic Emissions Test).
