I please need some advice as I am going to selling my car tomorrow and I am looking for a budget diesel preferably) 4x4 that is cheapish to run, has space for a bike rack, 3 dogs and luggage. I want something a bit quirky and dont really mind too much what I get.

So far am looking at a Pajero Junior (1.1 petrol) (its small but I could use a roofrack).
Ssangyong Korando 2.9 diesel (or Musso 2.9 diesel).
Nissan Terrano II 2.7 diesel
Mitsubishi Delica 2.9 diesel.

I would consider others but I need something mainly with space but also cheap to run, tax, insure etc. Budget up to 2k. I have found many within this price range but would be nice to hear from those who actually own and run this type of vehicle

Many thanks

Have you considered a Jeep Cherokee?

Petrol, straight 6, 4.0ltr will average near 30mpg, which won't be much if any worse than some of those listed.
Plus it's pretty bullit proof and easy enough to work on or get spares for.

Nah, it's much higher then. Nearer 45mpg.

Have you owned one?

Helped a mate buy one, and used it a few times.

I ran one as a aily driver for nearly a year.

I previously had a diesel one, and the difference was only a few mpg.

That's based over a full tank, which at the very most would last a week, and would include all sorts of driving from city centre traffic jams, to free running motorways to back roads etc. All usually done with a boot full of tools and equipment.

The best I had on the petrol was 32mpg, sat on with cruise on at 70 on a dual carriageway.

Anyway, I was just pointing out that it could be as cheap an option as some of the diesels the OP was considering, rather than saying it was the most economical car you could buy.

Oh and yes, if driven in a spirited manner it would easily achieve low teens at best mpg. hehe

Mine is lucky if it does 18mpg, but it does that even when towing 2.5T as the cruising speed is reduced accordingly.

What I would suggest is getting a LPG Grand Cherokee 4.0L

Mine is, and it does 16-18mpg, but its £0.75/L so it does 180-200 miles for £40 of fuel.

I paid £800 for it over 3 years and it has only needed about £300 spending on it in the last 25,000 miles!

Diffs and box are a bit noisy at times, but it has more than paid for itself in that time.

23mpg is the best I've seen from mine. I suspect if I really really tried I might see 25, but it wouldn't be a very nice way to drive. My Dad's 4.0 facelift one was similar. Average has to be in the teens for normal driving too.

The Grand Cherokee isn't a terrible idea on a reasonably low mileage. They're pretty well screwed together and don't give many problems. I know somebody who had an R reg 4.0litre and got 20-22mpg out of it on average which was above its claimed figures. The newer one in 1999 was less economical but a nicer car.

They're a prime candidate for LPG conversions and there's quite a few going on Auto Trader which have already had it done. The 3.1TD isnt economical enough to bother with, given diesel is 5p more a litre and the 2.7 CRD - an engine Mercedes have hardly fallen over themselves to get back from Jeep - is out of the OP's price range anyway.

erm they will all cost the same to tax pretty much.

Anything pre March 2001 is rated on engine size, so anything 1.6 litres or bigger is the higher rate. Apart from a petrol Jimny or Terrios which are 1.3 litres, you won't find many 4x4's in the lower bracket.

After March 2001 tax is done on Co2, pretty much ALL 4x4's, petrol or diesel will be in the higher bandings and cost similar.

MPG wise, 25-32mpg is a sensible range to look at. Mordern CRD diesel might be a bit better or lighter vehicles, but most won't be in the £2k budget, e.g. a diesel Freelander is rated at 37mpg.

A Land Rover Discovery is probably a good bet at this money. Easy to fix, although they like a bit of TLC, but generally very reliable in terms of the oily bits. Just watch for rust.

In my experience insurance isn't that bad on many 4x4's. I ran a quote last year for a 4.7 Grand Cherokee which was nearly half what I pay on my Rover 75. Work that one out.

Oh, I'd also suggest a Merc ML320

You can get a reasobable one for sub £2k, and the petrol is not too bad on fuel either

Only 4 sub £2k MLs on Autotrader so not exactly common.

But would you honestly trust a sub £2k ML never mind that it will struggle to do 20mpg and is Group 16 insurance. If its post 2001 I can't begin to think what the RFL will be.

OP - Does it have to be a 4x4?

I know I shouldn't question your choice but you don't state why you need a 4x4. fair enough if you do some off roading, towing or live at the end of a unmade road but you are limiting the choices hugely and they ae generally much more expensive to run than an estate car.

Eg. sensible mileage S2 V70

I've recently bought a 2002 v8 GC for around 3 grand. Apart from its appetite for unleaded, average around 18mpg, its been bargaining motoring!

Go on you know you want a V8 ; )

I had a 2003 Jeep Cherokee 2.4 petrol (the four cylinder one that nobody wants). To be honest it was quite charming. Pretty slow, certainly, but smooth and refined which is more than can be said or the diesel version. Economy of 26mpg was not significantly worse than the diesel either. It was third world bum basic engineering but that is what I was after and it certainly didn't let me down.
