Hi,

I have recently brought a streetKa for my little sister, it needs work which I am going to get sorted on it but I have to question the tappets, are they hydraulic or manual?

I believe the engine is a 1.6 Duratec 8v petrol but I am finding very little information on it.

Currently the tappets are very loud both when cold and hot.

If anyone has any information on the engine or can shed some light on this it would be useful. I will change all the filters and oil too but at the moment I want to get the tappets sorted or find out what they are so loud

Cheers

Valve clearance is maintained by hydraulic tappets. Try changing the oil for a good quality 5w-20 or 5w-30 oil first.

Ford recommends 5w-20 for those engines but the difference between that and 5w-30 is minimal.

Recommended engine oil
SAE 5W-20 Castrol SAE 5W-20 engine oil WSS-M2C948-B

well had a good go over the car, changed all the filters and the oils to 5-30 but its still sounding like a sowing machine frown

Anyone know if there is an issue? I guess I am going to have to change the tappets or take the rocker cover off to firstly see what is wrong

Any advice, costs or past experience would be appreciated. I guess its also a chain driven cam too as its a little noisy? I guess the issue could be a chain tensioner...

Found this, which may shed light on the fact its not as quiet as some in the Ford range. Depends on what you consider noisy. I guess it might be worth a visit to a ford stealer to see if ' they all sound like that' if your worried.

In 2000, Ford of Brazil developed a cheaper version of zetec-s engine. Single cam,8 valves driven by a chain. As a result, this engine exhibits rougher behaviour, producing more vibration and noise. On the other hand, it has a superb torque output thanks to the addition of the Rocam (rollerfinger camshaft) feature.

In 2003, the Zetec-Rocam engine was introduced in Europe, but labeled as Duratec 8v, for the SportKa and StreetKa models. Later a 1.3 L version was also released as an option for the standard model, but the European versions of the engine are produced in the South Africa plant

my sportka always sounded like it needed the tappets fixed. never went wrong though in the 3 years i owned it.
i drove it 30k miles in my ownership, and apart from the waterpump needing fixed every year it was spot on for the most part.

Today I had some spare time to get the rocker cover off smile when we collected the car my sister managed to get the EML to come on and the fault was a misfire in cylinder 4

Well with the rocker cover off it was easy to see the issue, the inlet cam follower was so loose I could almost remove it by hand, so the hydraulic tappet has collapsed or something like that, ordered a new one and they are about £9 if your in the same situation.

Didn't have too much time in there as she needed the car again, however how do they come out? do they lift or are the threaded? do I need a special tool

Cheers
