Does anyone know if the suzuki swift from 97 to 2001 (the one that looked exactly like the Subaru Justy) was also AWD? Or were they just 2WD?

This shape?

Standard was 2WD. Not sure if there was a 4WD version

Yes I've read about an AWD version, but I can't find anything to say all of them were as standard. I think you might be right.

I think the AWD version may have only been available abroad, I know they do an AWD of the new Swift which is not available here too.

You can buy the Swift in AWD form here, only it's not a Swift, it's a Subaru Justy.

yes

page 92 and 93 of the owners manual mentions the 4wd transission and rear differential and torque figures for tightening the oil plug bolts.

and page 120 explains how to convert to 2wd for towing

That shape Swift was avaialable in 4WD as a saloon and was an official import! It had a 100bhp 1.6 non injection engine. Looked like a mini impreza!

So no clear answer then. ALL Subaru Justy's from that era are AWD, but not all Suzuki Swifts of that era are? Is that what we're saying?

I had a little look at this when I owned my Subaru Juzty. Apparently the Swift was available AWD (same system fitted to either the Subaru or the Suzuki)

I had the Subaru for about 6 months and used it on the day that it snowed down here in the south. It was amazing fun. So controllable with the snow tyres and the AWD. Very quick on the country lanes in the snow. My mate driving an L200 was often up to a mile behind the Subaru as I had so much better traction and control due to the size and the snow tyres. One of the best drives I've had in any car for a long time.

Many of these little Japanese cars are available in Japan in AWD - they have cars like Toyota Yaris and Honda Jazz in AWD. In RHD of course, so would be easy to sell them here.

I once saw a swift gti 16'v 4 wd but it was a saloon and it was LHD I don't think we ever got a 4'wd gti in the UK as I only saw the one ( it was burgundy metallic and had a roll cage but was used as a road car).

As mentioned before the 4 door was 4WD but not the 3 door/ 5 door in the UK.
The 4 door 1600 4WD 1.6 16v SOHC came out around 1990 with about 89BHP or there abouts, I remember as I bought a new 3 door 1300 16v DOHC GTI at the time which was more powerful at 101BHP.

ive been googling for a while, but i cant find an answer...

do the 2wd swifts have the same floorpan as the 4x4 models? i.e can you convert a 2wd into 4x4 with just a bit of spanner work?

I was looking at the swift because the justy's don't come up very often and when they do, they seem to command quite a high price. Anything else you can think of for around £800? Needs to be cheap to run (think K11 micra) and AWD.
