Failing leads would lead to weaker spark, so less power. Probably not something you would notice until you put new ones one. The would be a mis-fire is only some of the leads are failing.
I'm a bit thick when it comes to engines also, so don't take my word for it.
Only ever replaced the leads on my first car, a Fiat Uno. Did know i needed new leads, but when i replaced them with performance ones (Hotwires) it made a world of difference. Car was much smoother

Ther only really noticeable sympton would be a mis-fire - unless it was the king lead then it would tend to die. In actual fact the original LR leads are quite OK and last a long time. Mine actually had asplit in the insulation near the plug extension which was arcing out. Silicone sealer and some tape and was as good as new but recommended to replace. Got some Magnecor leads from ACT at PFest last year. They look superb but the car doesn't run any better!
I had an intermittent misfire that got worse and worse. Eventually running on 7 cylinders. Replaced the spark plug extensions (£100) which put my mind at rest because one was obviously defective but the mis fire continued. Then worked out which of the HT leads was faulty and replaced it - about £5 from the local spare parts shop including adaptors for the TVR bend in the end of the lead - and the missfire was gone forever! I did not realise before that all HT leads are the same - just different lengths and with slightly different connectors sometimes.

How much!
I paid £3 each (total £24) for mine at ACT! dontknowmuch said:

Actually they are not all the same. Some have different resistance, some have different RF suppression etc. But yes, they all do the same job.
