Old hat really, but a good read. I hadn't.

Lim's Cobra is raced by the Zeroshift guy.

1000 hp Skyline . . .

Stealth wins. But I'll take the Cobra.

Thanks for link!

That test was done with the 400ci (6.6) 637bhp lump, 15 inch 205 Yokos, Konis and uprated Jag brakes. Traction and brakes were a problem - look at the 3.2 sec 60-100 time (only just beaten by the Stealth but faster than the 1000bhp Nissan and faster than a Porsche GT1).

Fast forward to today. Britain's most powerful NA small block: 702bhp from an ICE Automotive 427ci (7.0) talldeck small block Chevrolet. 18 inch 315 Corsas (rear), 285 (front), Penske shocks and 14 inch 6-pot AP Super Touring brakes. Progress with tyres/traction meant that in the wet the taps could be fully opened in 3rd and 4th gear at Pembrey.

I don't have the vocabulary to describe what it's like on full re-heat but at Spa in May a bloke had a video camera in another car and when I got to the top of Eau Rouge and let rip, it looks like all the other cars put their brakes on. It hit about 170-175 by the end of the Kemel Straight. 7 litres out of straight-through six inch side-pipes at 7500rpm is mind-blowing.

NASCAR heads in the pipeline to bring it up to about 800bhp. Yee har. If you like Cobras, Cheng Lim's the bloke to talk to!

The first passenger ride I had in it - when I was a novice racer - nearly made me want to get out. After a good neck bashing through the first 3 gears I expected a bit of respite in 4th. No chance, it dismissed 4th with the same violence as the first 3. It only had 500+bhp back then.

Now it's pulverising and utterly surreal when slaloming through backmarkers who, to be fair, aren't hanging about themselves.

Various pumps and other contraptions prevent a passenger seat being installed which is probably just as well, although a brave Autocar photographer once sat amongst it all to get some 'action' shots. See:

Looks pretty relaxed on the left seat.

Phil, I see you have a nice 4.5 Cerb (the zeroshifter right). My fav TVR. I think a targa or cabrio would make it todays top roadster. I came up with the idea several times at the PH forum. But some think a Chim is what I mean. You and I know a Cerbera is a class of its own in looks, style and with the awesome AJP8 in performance. What are your thoughts?

Due through EU laws the 16 valve AJP8 will have to go, so they tell me here . . . Shock! Maybe they can convert to 32v.

My thoughts on Cerberas?

Cerbera 4.5 is my favourite TVR. It's just so RIGHT. I'm not particularly interested in roof-off motoring - the only mods I'd request are more of what it does well. In particular more power.

My Cerbera 4.5 arrived in time for my first season in Tuscans so I did a lot of miles around the UK - and to Spa, WHAT a drive! - and I used it for "chauffeuring" sponsors on track days.

I was amazed to find the 4.5 made my old Griff 500 seem pedestrian and its poise on the limit is just sublime. For me, it does everything right. Cars have three steering controls - a wheel and two pedals. In the best cars, these controls work in harmony. The Cerbera can be driven fast at any angle you like. The balance of controls, the power, the handling, the ergonomics, the angry sound, the looks (wow! that hunched rear and leadsled roofline!) - I think it's nigh on perfect. Mine has been reliable too. No mean feat given that I have driven it like I stole it for the last 6 years - it has had serious punishment.

In 2001 it was joined by a Tuscan Red Rose. However, in the 3 years I've had the pair, it's the 4.5 that's gathered most miles.

You can do big journeys very fast in a Cerbera. It can reach colossal speeds in very short distances (and stop again) and can cruise at 'bahnstorming speeds for longer than a tank of petrol will last. There's not much else that can close down accelerating sports cars or bikes at 130 plus then drop a cog and pass them. My time from Calais to Le Mans in 2003 is best not discussed in public....

The blue 4.5 will never be sold now. The old blue meanie and I have a lot of great history together. It's joined my 'for keeps' list.

Another Cerbera is on the way...

Thanx. Your enthousiasm and non-snobbism does me good.

Is this a new one? Future Cerbs (mk2?) will be without AJP8

You may not particularly be interested in roof-off motoring but you drive one of the fastest Cobra's!

Hmmm. I can get a bit carried away about Cerberas...

New one is a new one, in build, due later this year. Will be a shame if AJP8 gets killed by Euro-tw*t law. It's one of the world's great engines IMHO. In overall terms, the six is probably better still because it's better in town. But there's just something about the hair-trigger throttle and crackling overrun that I love about the V8!

There have been lots of cars over the last few years which have so nearly beaten the Supercars / Caterham R500... It is a shame that they never seem to return after getting so close...

A few years back the 1000bhp Skyline should have done it, but the rate of acceleration at 100mph was so great that the reaction time was slow getting on the brakes again...

The Stealth got rather close in its year.

This year, the Atom 270 should maybe have got it has a higher % of weight at the back than the R500 Evo...

The braking performance of the R500's seem to be in a class of their own... Maybe they have hyper sticky special tyres that only last for 11 seconds?

Ahhhh…. Soooo Mr Zeroshift, you’re the one I had a little play with down the A5 coming back from Towcester (heading towards MK) a few months ago. I was in the Blue Chim. You were in your Tuscan. You know, I was gutted after that, I thought I was doing quite well, until you obviously changed up a gear.

A very sleek car. An engine with 511.1bhp and a very low weight gets it to the quarter mile in 9.8 seconds.

That was my Mustang featured in that article, really good day out & got to perform a static burnout for the cameras.

I have blown up that motor since then, it now has a 5.4 litre stroker motor & a Paxton Novi 200 S/C. Last weekend at Santa pod it went 10.79 @ 128.5 in the quarter, the eighth mile time was 6.94 @ 101.5, the brakes are , I am ashamed to say, still crap!!

Yeah I work Nr Towcester and live in MK Village, so the A5 is my usual commute. Although I’m rarely in the TVR, it only comes out every now and again. Call me a wimp, but I can’t stand commuting in it..

You know I lifted off so you could get passed me….!!! There that makes me feel better…!
