It would have to be Eperney for glugging champers for me but that still leaves you with a lot of driving.

I would stay in Kientzheim, charming little town! Six hours from Calais.

This place is very nice.

I usually stop over in Troyes or Dijon. Both are lovely towns with loads of hotels and restaurants at reasonable cost Inn Troyes - pricey http://www.maisonderhodes.com/ or half an hours drive from town and cheap http://www.moulineguebaude.fr/. Trip Advisor for Dijon.

Did this trip in 2001, stopped in Basel, then headed over Grimselpass.

On the way back came via Nice, then just crashed in a Formule 1 just outside Troyes.

We've stayed at La Bagnosienne the last two years on way back from skiing, it's a lovely location, handy for the main roads and run by an adorable couple - great value too when you include evening meal.

We did this last July and stopped in Arbois in the Jura. It's the beginning of the Alps and almost exactly half way. The last part of the drive after you leave the autoroute is wonderful. I'd recommend going that far down on the first day (500 miles). The next morning you go over the Grand St Bernard, with a choice of pass or tunnel.

We stayed at Restaurant Jean-Paul Jeunet.
