On a related topic, I saw my first kill by an urban fox the other day, bloody feathers left over in a shop doorway in Wimbledon. I always thought of them as dustbin feeders rather than actually hunting!
May I suggest something by Browning or Beretta?
ETA just to redress the balance (and I'm not sure how true this is) a chap I know who has a small holding told me that a fox once got it's head stuck in a fence and was pecked to death by the chickens! ouch.

Yup, we've had lambs and sheep attacked by foxes, vicious little sods. When I was young and naive, I used to be anti fox-hunting, believing it to be cruel and inefficient. Now I'm older and wiser, I appreciate the role it has in rural society - not least the fallen stock service that the hunt kennels provide to farmers.
When the government banned hunting, they completely missed this aspect, with the result they had to cobble together a solution which most people would find more unacceptable than hunting the odd fox. In the old days, when an animal died on your farm or smallholding, you used to chuck it in the back of a truck and take it up to the hunt kennels, who would dispose of the carcass for you - usually by incineration, they don't feed diseased old crap to their dogs.
Under the new system, you theoretically have to report the death and then wait until a government licensed contractor turns up to take it away - which can be up to a month or more! You're not allowed to bury or burn animals on your own land, so under the new system it would have been quite likely to have piles of dead animals rotting away until someone turned up to deal with them.
Little wonder that the government then had to turn to the hunts to help out with the situation, with the resulting blind eye being turned to hunts going out for a ride and 'accidentally' coming across a fox.

Fox hunting in it's traditional form was far from the 'Tally Ho' circus you're thinking of. It was a job to many. They would be called out by farmers to deal with a problem and paid a bounty for each fox killed. Badgers too were on the agenda as were Otters and many other animals seen as a threat to livestock. It was an important job in a time when many people lived off the land.OP you'll have a job with a shotgun if it's a fit healthy fox. Shoot a couple of pigeons and use them as bait near its den might work but chances are if you're close enough to be effective with a shotgun it will smell you. It's a job for someone who knows what they're doing with a rifle.

king painful.Will never agree with fox hunting. But humane shoot and kill just about acceptable to me.
But not a good move for OP to come onto an animal forum and describe his wishes to make an animal deliberately suffer! Not going to win many over that way.

One of the saddest moments in my life was getting a phone call at work from my very upset wife, I could hear my eldest daughter crying hysterically in the background -a fox had just killed her pet rabbit 
There was a lot of hatred in our house for foxes after this, but we did accept it was all part of nature. Setting out to deliberately wound an animal in the hope it will die a painful death is not the answer.

Firstly, I didn't post it into the animal forum. I posted it into the lounge.
Secondly I'm annoyed, I wouldn't want to make it suffer, but it's days are definitely numbered.
It got in the coup because the recent rain had warped one of the boards, enough for it to get a purchase on it.
Yes I may have difficulty hittin it with a shotgun. But like I said, I know where it's den is.
2 Gallons of unleaded and a match should do it.
