Several months ago I signed up to get information from Toyota and Subaru about the GT86/BZR.

Toyota kept sending me little updates and then sent me a e-brochure and a hard copy which both arrived the same day.

Subaru have sent me loads of stuff on their other cars, an april fools spam, and this morning a "Subaru Snow Alert" e-mail which said "All wheel drive and aircon as standard on every Subaru”.

They do know the BZR is RWD don't they? Or have they just forgotten they are making it?

Certainly it's not in the list of the Subarua range in the e-mail, just the Impreza, WRX STI, Forester, Legacy, Outback, Cosworth and XV. None of which I want to buy.

Please Subaru, help us to help you.

Autocar didn't forget about it - they did a big review of the BRZ against the 370Z and MX5 on the roads in the South of France - see yesterday's issue

But the BRZ isn't even for sale yet, so technically they're right... for now.

Maybe because it is actually a Toyota.

Funnily enough, our local Toyota dealer has got GT86 brochures in but there are no BRZ ones yet I've seen at the Subaru dealer

Silly Toyota for wasting time sending me information I requested on a car they don't even sell yet.

Although Subaru UK do list the BZR on their website, just not in e-mails to people who requested information on the BZR.

It's the contrast between the two companies that annoyed me.

And the inconsistent PR message.

And the hysterical snow warning.

Toyota don't sell anything vaguely interesting, so they focus on the GT86. Subaru still have the WRX/STI to push.

Completely with you there, the April Fool joke really annoyed me. Not even an acknowledgement from them when I signed up all those months ago.

Did you ask them about the BRZ rather than the BZR? Might help...

maybe they're trying to forget it for a bit .. probably still a bit p*ssed that Toyota insisted the car was made RWD where Subaru allegedly wanted it AWD (save them changing all their slogans!? wink )

Here's a video they've made on the BRZ ( right after yesterday's GT86 clip )

 I'd feel worse about forgetting the order of the letters it has instead of a name if the company that is supposed to be selling it hadn't forgotten about the whole thing.

The difference is that Toyota are traditionally a competent company selling boring products, so they have the marketing and distribution right. Subaru are basically an incompetent company selling interesting products, so they time after time fail to get the most basic things right. The BRZ has been pretty much lost under the weight of Toyota's PR machine to the point where even when it is available and people see it on the road, most people won't know its a Subaru. By all accounts the cars are identical save the nose and badges and virtually the same to drive, and I suspect that more will be swayed by the Toyota brand and wider availability of dealers to make the Subaru very much the minority.

Of course this might all be part of the plan - Subaru effectively build the thing, Toyota give them the scale to make it a viable product, and in return Subaru enjoy some sort of cachet as the relatively rare one.

To be honest, I'd just go for a Toyota, but I'm biased by my memories of my old Celica.

If you go and speak to a competent Subaru dealer, as I did on the weekend, you'll find a lot more information.
It'll be on sale in September but you CAN order one now. You can also go out and test drive one at a location I've forgotten (what was that red light they pointed at me?) in the north of England. This particular dealer also has a huge stock of gold OZ wheels in stock for the release too. The STI spec one, with no more power, will come next year.
