Hey,

So I recently god a takeaway delivery job, starting tomorrow, and I am a bit concerned about the insurance. I phoned up my insurer (Admiral) and they said they would not be able to insure me while im working, and that my employer should sort it out for me. So I phoned my employer and asked him about it, he said not to worry about it, and that i'm covered on his libability fire and theft insurance while im at work. Now this is a small family run business, and I just started working for him, basically im not 100% sure weather i trust him, I think it was be easy for him to just tell me im insured, and that im actually not. Basically I'm just looking for advice, I'm not really sure weather i want to risk driving without insurance. Sorry if i've not explained this very well. Help is appreciated.

Ask for a copy of his policy document, showing it covers you and your car.

I don't think that his 'Fire & Theft' policy will cover you using your own vehicle for deliveries.

If you have a bump in your car whilst delivering pizzas, I'm not at all sure you will be covered.

Is this an above board job with a contract? Or is it a cash in hand job? If you have a contract, it should say about insurance, normally there will be a declaration you need to sign saying your car is properly insured for business use.

It is possible that his business insurance will cover you, but you will have to check his policy, or ask him to write you a statement confirming that you are covered on his insurance.

If he gets awkward when you ask him to write a statement for you then you could say something like your car is on finance and the finance company need proof etc....

I think i'll do this, my friend said if i get caught with a delivery, and not being insured i could get up to 6 points on my licence. It's just not worth the risk imo.

That is correct, you could also get a fine and have your car seized. Well worth making sure you are properly insured.

I don't have a contract, It's but i've applied to a few takeaways, some of those companies include pizza hut, and dominoes, both of which im happy to work for (i feel pretty confident that they have correct insurance etc) its just these small businesses that i'm questioning, and i think it would be a good idea like you said to say that my finance company needs proof. I'll try that if he doesn't like me asking about it. Thanks.

I wouldn't be running a car for business use with out my own insurers approving it no matter what their insurance stated.

If you are using your own car it must be your responsibility for it to be insured for that purpose, not got any inside knowledge to back that up but your insurer do ask you it the car is to be used for business use. Insuring it social and commuting means they don't think you will be working in it surely??

Guessing that most fast food drivers are uninsured and the companies really don't want anything to do with paying for drivers insurance.

Dominoes and pizza hut have the correct insurance to cover you, so it would be a good idea if you could work for them.

If he starts getting awkward about you asking for proof then the chances are that his insurance won't cover you.

You could always see how much it would cost you to change insurance company and add business use, then you could ask your employer if he would pay the extra in return for you putting some stickers on your car saying his business name etc?

Well when i phoned Admiral, they said they would never be able to offer me any kind of insurance that would cover me for the period that i would be working, and my best option would be to get my employer to do it.

What did they say when you asked them what proof they wanted to see?

You did ask them, right?

I'd guess an MOT certificate.

yes, if i can find it, its probably a stupid question, but i'm new to driving, only been driving roughly 4 weeks or so, and I haven't MOTed the car yet, so i don't really know what im looking for, i think i'll just take all the paperwork for the car with me then. It should be in there somewhere.
Thanks

They just said proof of MOT, insurance, and driving licence.

Probably best find it before you go - you want to look professional.

Getting a delivery job after 4 weeks of driving is jumping in at the deep end! Good luck, hope you enjoy it.

Very true, as your having to be extra observant, I did it at college. One little hint, get a powerful LED torch. Its a nightmare finding house numbers at night!!
