Hi all,

Shortly I hope to be the proud owner of a Cayman S smile My diligent side tells me to enquire on a few things, so:

1) Rough cost of a decent set of tyres?

2) Disks and Pads?

3) Rough cost of clutch replacement, and when does it typically go?

4) A good indie in Essex?

5) Real world MPG (I come from an STi mapped and what have you, so I am used to eye watering fuel consumption)

Genuine Thanks everyone...

Autostrasse in Coggeshall near Colchester look after my 993 and come recommended.
Proper old school motor engineers.

1 and 2) Have a look at the maintenance blog in my profile for what mine has needed doing and what it cost. Your service costs would be less if using an indie though.
Tyres will depend on brand and wheel size, but 19" Michelin PS2s for the rear are over £300 each ATM (unless you buy during a good Costco offer). Fronts will be cheaper, but not sure of price as not had to change them yet on mine.

3) no idea on cost but my car is on about 53k miles now and still on original clutch. Doesn't feel like it's slipping yet and not unusually heavy so a bit more life left in it yet I think.

4) wrong region for me, so can't help there!

5) on my daily commute it is between 24 and 29 depending on route, traffic and pace. Probably averages out at about 26-27. Long motorway runs see over 30, whereas enthusiastic B-road blasts see high teens.

HTH

Pop over to PSR Automotive in Bishops Stortford. Specialise in Loti and Porsche.

Disks and pads all round on my Cayman S last year came to £760 at an indy. Average fuel consumption is 26 on my daily commute which is a mix of A and B roads plus a bit of motorway.

What are the benefits of super on this car? Better performance, or better for engine etc!?

Better performance, essentially. They will run ok on lower octane but the ecu retards the ignition and consequently reduces the power. As an aside, I also get better mpg from Super than from 95.

As already mentioned, Autostrasse are good guys but don't have any diagnostics for later stuff. They're good with air-cooled cars but PSR in Bishops Stortford is now my choice of independent. I've used them a few times now and more than happy with the level of work/service.

They service 996s at Autostrasse....does later stuff require different equipment?

There was something they couldn't do to my 997 about 18 months ago, can't remember exactly what it was though.

I dropped my car off at PSR yesterday to have an alignment done. They kept me in touch and suggested that having the alignment completed would be a waste of funds as there were one or two issues with the suspension that would render it pointless. Now they could easily have gone ahead and taken the cash but instead advised me of what the problems were and in their eyes would be the best course of treatment. They did actually align the car free of charge and put it down as a health check.
They had no guarantee when making their suggestions that I would go back to have the work done but their professionalism and honesty will be to their benefit as I will certainly be returning to have them complete the work.

So refreshing to witness that kind of customer service......a big thumbs up for PSR from me !

Had a few questions about my new toy, so popped in PSR... Good guys and Paul was very helpful.

They are not far from me, and the country lane drive is also fantastic smile

They're excellent - Paul's a very nice bloke too. I'm very local too, so keep your eyes open for a white Cayman S when you're out on the country lanes!
