I bought a Sharp soundbar back in December, and it works very well.

The past couple of months though, there has been an issue when watching DVD's on my (very) old Sony DVD player.

It doesn't always happen, but the sound will cut out at random. It's as if the unit is muting, however there is no visual indicator of it doing this, and if you mute/un-mute the unit it has no effect.

The only way to get the sound back on is to switch it off then on again.

It doesn't do this if watching TV, or listening to the radio, so I can only assume that the fault is linked to the DVD player.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what it could be? The soundbar is linked to the TV via the headphone jack.
I've had a look online and can't see anything related.

Is it just the sound on the soundbar that dissapears? Next time it does it un plug it from the headphone jack and see if the sound comes from the TV speakers.

I think it is just the soundbar, but I'll double check that in the coming days.

The odd thing is, you can watch some DVD's without any problems, but eventually, and I think it happens if the soundbar has been on for some time beforehand, the sound will go off, then I know it's going to do it quite often, perhaps every ten minutes or so.

Didn't make any difference unplugging the headphone jack. It went quiet almost as soon as I put a DVD on the other day, which was annoying.

I'm going to try using the phono-phono input instead, although it'll be a bit slapdash as it'll only take one feed from the DVD's Left and one from the Right, instead of two for each.

We'll see what happens.

If there is no sound from the TV speakers then its nothing to do with the sound bar, its a connectivity issue between the DVD and the TV or a fault on either.
With the soundbar connected to the headphone jack it is just taking analogue audio from the TV and amplifing it, by the sound of it the TV headphone socket stops supplying sound to the soundbar for whatever reason.

I never thought of the TV being at fault, it makes sense though as it's in the middle of the two.

I nosed around the back of the DVD player and amongst all the 5.1 outputs, there's a L/R output as well, so I linked these straight to the soundbar, so the TV is out of the chain.
I watched a DVD afterwards without any problems, so you're probably right that the TV was causing the muting issue.

Try turning the level of the TV to near maximum and the sound bar to very low. Some sound bars have an energy-saving function that makes them mute when the incoming signal falls below a certain volume
