Hot hatch for 1.5k
Discussion
Due to a change of circumstances with work, going from a temporary possition with nice pay, to being offered a great apprenticeship with a very small ammount of pay. I have decided that my idea of a 3-5k classic or TVR is a bit silly.
Now per the title i've decided that i can shell out 1.5k to get a nippyish interesting hot hatch. I've seen clio williams mk2's in this range as well as gti6's and various other french cars, however i have no idea the current market value for them and having looked for a clio williams a few years ago this price seems far to cheap for what i was seeing back then.
So guys, i can imagine that puma, mx5 and saxo will all come flying at me, be aware i do not appreciate vtr's at all, a mate had one and it was terrible, although he bought quickly like a tool without thinking.

Focus ST, not as exciting as the French stuff but should be cheap to run.

My obvious answer would be a 206 GTi 138. And £1700 will get you a 180 nowadays.
i always thought they have a poor reputation as a fun/drivers car, the same as the golf gti, a gti just in name only.GTiFrank said:

Wtf just avoid the scene then surely.

Don't tempt me with another corrado, i loved mine. The only problem is the current scene and just how it used to throw its toys out of the pram on a regular basis. It did handle so well, it sounded ammazing and had one of the best driving positions i've experienced in a car.
Bit of a leftfield choice, but have you considered a Skoda Octavia VRS?
You can get a good Mk.1 for that price. Not as small as a 'hot hatch' but despite being a 4 door hatchback and looking like a bigger car than the Clio's and Focuses already mentioned, is actually quite compact as it's based on a Mark 4 Golf GTI chassis.
You get:
180 bhp
GTI handling
Four door practicality and a hatchback with a great load area
Great build quality, proven reliability, cheap parts prices and servicing costs, and no rust (unlike some of the cars mentioned)
