Just managed to fry wiring between light switch and facia panel with a short, the switch itself has even melted a bit and won't turn. Thought I was going to be back on road today after the winter work, did 400 rivets on the floor yesterday and my hands are knackered!

Oh dear. When you say the switch, do you mean the stalk itself? If so you can pick them up cheaply from breakers or auction sites. Just make sure you search for Mk6 Escort 4 door as the 3/5 dr version has a rear wiper. If you can find one from a Ghia or Ghia X it'll have the 6 position intermittent wiper adjustment too which fits without modification.

Oh God - now there's a wiper upgrade too! I fitted a new Bosch Silver Plus battery yesterday, and managed a very minor short with a spanner on the positive terminal contacting the alternator pulley. It's all pretty tight in that area!

You might be able to wire the stalk so that the hazard light flashes with the indicators

I have a short wrench (~3" long) that I use for battery terminals - most of the wrench has been covered with insulation because I'm always worried about doing the same thing! One helpful tip is to always attach the positive lead first, then do the negative. That way, your odds of shorting the wrench against something are much lower. Do the reverse while disconnecting the battery - ground first, then the positive lead.

Been after a proper 13mm stubby for ages - would be handy for turbos and manifolds too. As for connecting positive first - electrically absolutely correct, but mechanically a nightmare as I can only access the negative terminal with the battery partially dropped from the car. I think the side intake hoses need rerouting to improve access!

You can always disconnect the other end of the ground cable, where it attaches to the chassis...

As for a stubby 13mm, I'm lucky enough that the professional tool makers over here (Snap-On, Mac, etc.) all have them in their normal catalogs. Otherwise, what I was going to do before the Snap-On truck rolled up, was to buy a cheap wrench from the local home center, and chop it down with a cutoff wheel. Grind it smooth, then cover with some heat shrink tubing, and presto - a custom-made special purpose battery wrench!

I was just wondering if I need to do anything else or if I have a faulty wiper switch? (Not that my car ever gets wet, but it is handy if you get caught in the odd light shower)

I tried this last week and had exactly the same result as you, I need to find a bit of time and study the wiring diagrams for both cars!

Glad it's not just me then, I'll take a look at it when I get the time and let you know if I find anything useful. I did notice an extra pin in the back of the new wiper switch which I'm assuming has something to do with it.

Have a look at the relay when you get it, the pin which is missing at the wiper stalk may need to go the relay (if there is one missing too). Try it first to see if it works, if not connect up the spare pins. I used to work for Ford and you could upgrade to variable wipe just by changing the stalk and relay, it may not have the extra wire in the loom on our cars though.

Yes, when I said 'fits without modification' I didn't say it would work too biggrin

D_G is right, you need the relay too and the loom (if you can call it that) is missing what the standard Ford loom has to allow them to be plug and play. Escort Haynes manual will be your friend!

I'll get the escort Haynes manual and a relay, but to be honest if its too much work ill give up lol.
