Hi peeps...

Have picked up my Chim 450 now, and consequently keep wanting to go out unnecessarily...

But my radio (a small concern, I know...) will not come on unless the full ignition is on. Is this normal? I'm having a new one fitted, and was going to ask them to rig it up to the Acc (pos 1?) feed, but don't want them digging around in my dash for a wire that's not there...

Cheers!

Hopefully will see some of you around on the roads!

Mine does this too, which is very annoying if you are waiting for someone and want to listen to the radio.

Edit: And yet the electric windows, which on most cars only work with the ignition on, work even when the keys aren't in the ignition.

Have just done a quick search on the forums, seems this has been covered before! Looks like there is indeed no Acc wire, and the best option is just to connect the constant live and switched live feeds together, and then remember to switch the radio off every time I leave the car.

Not sure whether that'll power up the CD changer though...

Ditto on the windows...

Ditto.

I don't know anything about how it's hooked up behind the dash, but I don't know of anything that works in position 1 that doesn't work with the keys completely out of the car.

The Chim/Griff electrics don't use an 'aux' feed so there's no supply from the ignition key switch to tap into. The switch itself will have an 'aux' capability so it should be reasonably simple to install the extra wiring.

Be there done that..........but there is NO AUX on early ignition switches nor any way to provide it other than "changing" the whole installation. Tried & tried all permutations and physical inspection !!!

I do not know when the "later" type ignition switches which provided AUX were installed - Sorry !!

As already suggested, wire to fuse protected permanent live feed and remember to switch off radio - Most "new" radios are face-off and when face is removed, radio is disabled.

Thanks for that...

Have fitted radio now, and used permanent live feed. Very easy to do, and I didn't fancy rummaging around behind my dash and in the steering column for something that might not even be there, though mine is a '97.

Works like a dream, and having already had one radio nicked last year (left the front under the seat - doh!) I'm almost obsessive-compulsive about removing the front...

Too late now I know, but I've also been there & done it. And discovered there's no alternative or Acc position. There is a permanent live behind the radio (for elec aerial?) and this is just joined to the radio feed. From memory the wire you need to join are red and yellow.

Mmmm, connecting radio red and yellow to a permanent supply more often than not creates a permanent current draw from the battery that will eventually flatten it

After 18 years I would imagine the battery has already gone flat by now

Better still I never switch the bugger on so never worry about turning it off on exit hehe
Is this the fix?

It makes no sense that nobody picked up on the problem 18 years ago, connecting red and yellow to a permanent supply and draining the cars battery is donkey's years old, not sure about the average life expectancy of a donkey is though

The fix is easy , just remove the plastic tab on the ignition switch IIRC smile

Strangly enough I never use it , I used it when stuck in traffic on the M25 years back coming back from a Neil Garner open day about 4 years ago , I appreciate music sound quality which you just wont reach in a open top car let alone a noisy TVR so i dont even try
