What car? - for a ring trip

So this time we have decided to take just one car instead of all taking our own. Now theres no way I'm going all the way in my mates 106 and there's also no way I'm letting him take my m3 round the ring. This means that we need to buy something to go in. So max budget £2k. Must survive the trip to be resold when we return.
We've done this before when we were 19ish. Resulting in a nice trip in a Carlton 3000 gsi 24v
This time round ic seen a few jxr's Audi s8 or mercs that might fit the bill any other ideas guys?

Given the current state of the economy... blah blah, for re-saleability you are probably better off getting a smaller engined car, or something niche with a loyal following. Big barges may be hard to shift, and will probably be heavy on consumables.
With that in mind, I'd be tempted by;
MX-5
MR2 (pref mk3 - just about in budget too)
Puma (RWD could let you have more fun though...)
Porsche 924/944 (maybe getting old).

Doing this is something that had crossed my mind, but i would worry that it is a bit of a gamble buying a sub <2k car and then pushing it to its limits on the ring having not had time for any potential problems to rear their heads.
Obviously if your know a bit about mechanics this would be less of a problem, but i don't!

Drive there in your M3, rent something for the ring, drive back in your M3. Would involve far less fannying around than trying to buy anything interesting under £2k that won't leave you at the side of the road waiting for a very expensive recovery truck.
And I didn't even mention insurance

And the clutch slave gave up on the m1 on the way home but we got there.
