How much should I expect to pay to change shocks and springs
Discussion
I have billies on my eunos, Ive had some secondhand mazda standard shocks and springs boxed up since last year, and I want them put on but something else always comes up as priority.
I want the billies off with the springs and will get four new bump stops and need to know how much it will cost to change them over.
If the billies are ok I can then sell them cheap to a member to offset some of the cost.
Any ideas?
I know that shocks are hard to change over.

It would seem most DIY mechanics can get the rears done in under an hour each, with the fronts taking a little longer due to more bolts needing to be removed to get to them.
A local garage quoted me around half day to do all 4.
It is quite a straight forward job by the looks of it, just the rusty bolts will take the most time to free off.
I'm doing mine on Sat this week, with my dad ( a retired mechanic with 50 years experience) so should save me a few quid and educate me at the same time hopefully......
I'm swapping OEM stuff for Bilstien sport dampers and Eibach pro springs on my MK2, which I'm gradually tweaking for track day fun. (TR Lane rollbar went in last month and took the best part of 7 hours to get fitted and relevant panels/trim all modified)

Hate to be unkind but do you work for nothing?
If you cannot do stuff yourself perhaps you should have a modern car that requires no work.
The MK1 MX is no longer a girlie car because they are now only able to exist with the help of enthusiasts and only rarely are these female.
My advice would be to start getting some tools together and do it yourself.

Well there is just no way I can afford to come up with that sort of money to change over shocks.
Thats a frightening cost to someone like me.
Well you are paying for somebody else's time and experience, who has the gear to do it. What did you expect, they have a business to run!Thats a frightening cost to someone like me.
Last time I got the suspension changed on a car I paid £800 including components. I like to spin the spanners, but it felt like it was beyond me so paid somebody else to do it - that's the choice you make.
ETA: if you'd forgone the style bar you could have got the suspension fitted

Alright! no need for that.
Earning £1054 a month does not leave me the money for that sort of bill. I think sometimes people dont realise that owning a house and one wage and paying for a child doesnt leave you with enough to enjoy yourself or get these sort of things done.
Maybe if I had two wages coming in I could, but I was thinking more like £140 to change them over. I will just have to make do until I do have the money. If I get a bonus in july I may just be able to pay for it.

Yes you are being unkind. And I do stuff on the car myself, I am on nutz and mx0cforum. You will find on there a lot of female owners and soon myself and my friend will be doing my brakes and shes a lady owning to mx5s.If you cannot do stuff yourself perhaps you should have a modern car that requires no work.

The shocks is something i dont know much about and I would do it (i have the enthusiasts manual) but not being a strong person and having the right tools I wanted to know the cost to prepare to get it done. If my friend will help me I will do it, because I will be helping her.
Besides that getting a modern car is something I have had before and I like the mx5. I've had it for five years and had lots done to it. So not financially viable to get a modern car.

The style bar was bought two-three years ago???? What does that have to do with it. Once the suspension is changed the billies will be sold to help the cost. I may see if I can do this myself with my friend. I also have a mk1 roof frame to do up and sell.
You could try someone like Roddo. Not exactly on your doorstep but ideally you will want the geo reset anyway so he might well do you a deal to replace and do geo.
To be honest, changing shocks isn't a job I'd take on myself even though I do have the tools & knowledge to do it (I think). It's fine if it goes smoothly but if any of the nuts are rust-welded on, the bolts are rusted into the bushes etc. then it becomes a real pain and I don't have the garage space to do it indoors or the drive space to leave it outside unusable.

I was quoted about £240 from my local 'family friend' mechanic to do the suspension, that was assuming not having difficulty with rusty bolts etc.
I chose to use that as a last resort and give it a go myself. 9 hours later, and with the help of my brother and his various power tools it was all sorted.
The guides all over the net / owners club make it seems harder than it actually is, it really is a piece of cake. Just can be time consuming if, like me, EVERY BLADDY THING was rusty and required hammering on sockets.
In hindsight I would angle grind the old ones off, would save half the fitting time no problems

No need to be so defensive, nobody is having a go! You asked what the cost would be and then got upset when it was more than you expected. You want somebody else to do the jobs you can't but expect it to be bargain basement - by definition it will cost more than an easy job as it's more labour intensive. The style bar was bought two-three years ago???? The quip about the style bar was only a joke - but you could have spent that money on oily bits

Relax - you've had a good offer there. Or try Freelance Mazda if in Kent.
