It's the ideal time for me to go running, however I don't want to run just after my bran flakes otherwise I'd probably see them again, however I'm sure running on an empty stomach is not wise. Does anyone here have any tips on what I can eat or drink a small amount of to give me the energy for a 20-30 minute run, and how long before running I should have it?

A small Banana and a cup tea will be fine, as will running on an empty stomach.

Seriously do what feels right for you.

A 20-30 minute run is nothing. The stored energy in your blood and muscles will fuel your run and a lot more if required. There are many who think an empty stomach is best for this kind of exercise. However if you want to eat something small that will be fine too.

Personally when I run I do it first thing on an empty stomach. I also box 3 mornings a week at 8am. I have a banana and cup of tea at about 7.
I only eat on boxing mornings because I can do it about an hour before I train otherwise I wouldn't. I don't eat when I run because I pretty much will be up, and out of the door running within about 15 minutes.

20-30mins before breakfast will do you no harm. If you feel you need it, as above, a banana and some water (tea wastes too much precious time in the morning hehe) should also be ok.

I normally just have a glass of orange juice. Some sugars and a bit of hydration will give you everything you need for a short run. Just make sure you stretch off properly if you're getting up and heading straight out or your biggest risk will be injury.

As has been said, you've got enough fuel onboard for a 2hr run, let alone 20 or 30 mins.
Personally, the mornings when I'm running consist of getting out of bed, straight into a pair of runners and off out the door. Forget about nutrition, I don't normally wake up properly until I've done 3 or 4k biggrin
You could have a gel or something if it makes you feel better, but you really don't need it for that kinda run.

It's already been said but some mornings I'm in the gym or running for half 5, I don't have time to have breakfast but do as soon as I'm finished I'll eat

I'll train for roughly 45 minutes to an hour.

I've been running since last September, and going out in the morning before breakfast is the best time for me. When I first started out, I was having an Apple, but now I have nothing.

It's bloody cold in the middle of the winter though, that's made better by some of the excellent sunrises as the spring starts to come through. I'm looking forward to getting out in the summer when it's nice and warm and bright. It's an excellent way to wake up.

People say its best for weight loss in teh morning and with no food.

I nearly went this morning but my daughter woke up and thought id give the mrs a later start. Im never normally awake early enough to go.

The odd time i am awake i quite enjoy a morning run or bike ride. Always seems the best part of day.

I normally have a quick cup of tea with 1 sugar then head out for a run. Only normally do 2 or 3 miles so running on an empty stomach is fine.

If I was doing a gym session then maybe eat a banana before I go to give me some energy

Any tips for overcoming the irresistible urge to hit snooze at half six in the morning and just not bother?

I struggle to get out of bed at the best of times and have never run in the morning, like the idea of it but my body won't let me.

Set the alarm earlier and snooze once or twice.

Going to get harder for me as I will need to get up 15mins earlier soon so I can run longer. I don't eat or drink anything ether until I have finished.

Same here, blood 'feels' thicker like oil i guess it needs time to warm up !

Start work at 6am so any morning training is now out of the window unless i start running at 3am.

Still running in the afternoon! I'm bumping up the exercise now, in 7 weeks I'm going to Vegas and I want to drop around 10 lbs. So is running before breakfast beneficial to weight loss? I'll do about 30 minutes or 3 miles.

I'm canny pissed so this might sound harsh...

But for fk sake, just get out and run.

I've done half marathons on an empty stomach - the only thing that'll seriously slow you down is a colon full. People seem to be come so distracted by getting their 'fuel' right - it makes absolutely no difference to the average runner. Unless you're running 30 miles a day, don't let it bother you.
The human race didn't get to where it is now by being prissy on the fuel we feed it.

JFDI isn't a bad attitude really. I did 11 miles on Friday before breakfast as my commute to work with no problems.
