Putting fuel in the OHs car...
Discussion
Probably a cool starry bra, but I need to share this with fellow PHers...
I have owned my 530i for about 3 years now, the OH uses it a fair amount if she needs to carry anything big, or as today if she needs to ferry more people about than comfortably fit in her civic.
I just received a phone call from her dad (one of the passengers) asking how to open the fuel filler door.
A couple of things strike me...
First, this shows that she has never put fuel in my car, not once, despite driving it quite a bit over the last 3 years.
Second, her dad drives a 3 series of similar vintage and I don't think the fuel filler door is any different on a 5 series? So is she trying to make a point that she has had to put fuel in my car?
Is it normal practice amongst PHers to return the OHs car with the fuel light on, or do you, like me, splash a tenner in the tank to cover what you have used?

Yep, if you're using the OH's car it's just good manners to replace the fuel that you've used - I'd be pretty narked if my missus was using one of my cars on a regular basis and the tank was always empty.
OP: if she ain't the type to fuel up your car, maybe you could take payment in other (ahem) ways?

Yes that would be an acceptable form of payment, however my 'OH' is my wife, so it's not a regularly used line of credit OP: if she ain't the type to fuel up your car, maybe you could take payment in other (ahem) ways?

Is this an annoyance thing or a cost thing?
Within a year of me and my wife being together all money (and at times debt) was shared so who fills up a car from a cost point of view is completely irrelevant, is this not the same for most couples?
Me and my mrs are completely financially seperate. Within a year of me and my wife being together all money (and at times debt) was shared so who fills up a car from a cost point of view is completely irrelevant, is this not the same for most couples?

Same here. And normally it's the wife who fills the cars up on her way to work.cerbfan said:

Neither really, more of an amusing observation... We have a similar(ish) arrangement to yourselves - what's mine is hers, and what's hers is hers...Within a year of me and my wife being together all money (and at times debt) was shared so who fills up a car from a cost point of view is completely irrelevant, is this not the same for most couples?
Seriously though, we keep our finances mostly separate, this allows me to indulge my car addiction without too many arguments, and she can purchase obscenely expensive shoes and handbags whilst I am blissfully ignorant of the cost.
Is this someone you are married to, has born your children and you exchange bodily fluids with or just a casual acquaintance?
You refer to her as OH but that can mean anything these days.
If its the Mrs, she is a named user on my credit card so in effect I pay it all. She pays the mortgage and it's all out of the family budget.
If it's just a casual shag then then she can get her own!

The E39 and E46 have different fuel filler hatch mechanisms. The E39 simply opens with a push on teh front half once the central locking in unlocked. The E46 needs a push "in" on the trailing edge in order to open it. I always put fuel back into a car if I've been lent it, or borrowed it, whether that be from a friend or family member. It's simply good manners IMHO. Don't let it get to you.
