Porsche Boxster fits the bill perfectly, unless you need 4 seats. In which case, tell them to walk.

Im in a similar position so really interested to see people views on this, currently I am thinking:

- E36 M3 Evo.

I would say so, particularly for the E36 as £6k is getting towards top money in the current market. With the Chim there are some about at that money, but the condition seems quite variable.

Either way both are probably going to need some work at that age, and a bad one could be an expensive mistake, although one advantage is they both should be insurable on a classic policy as second cars.

Should be able to get a good CAT D car or a average 4L car if you hunt around.

Chimaera for that money will have issues to sort. A TVR Wedge will ve very good at that money & a lot more fun, (same engine etc) or one of the S Seres Tivs.

Bought one a feww weeks ago for £5K, it's actually a daily driver and not a weekend toy and it's the Mrs's car, stole the keys for the first time over the weekend and it's actually quite a good little car, goes well, makes a nice noise and quite a nice place to spend a some time.
It's never going to scare me like the TVR still does but all in a good £5k car, a £5k TVR will most likely need a few grand on the 'to do' list, the Pork although not much cheaper to run year on year might not be hiding any scary bills under the skin. wink

Sold, but you get the idea. Can't see it depreciating much, if any, but you might have to spend a bob or two maintaining it in the meantime...

Porsche 944 and an RVF400.

Or an FC RX7 plus a V8 and workshop time.

The first one, I'm getting lazy.

You can. But if it's a Chimaera you're after you'd need to look very carefully and accept that a cat D or a very early example is probably your best bet at that sort of budget.

Personally - as far as TVRs go - I'd spend the money on a mint S3 or 400i ('Wedge') instead. That should get you a nice example of either rather than what's likely to be a slightly rough Chim.

I loved my S3 (you can probably tell wink) and it would probably be top of my list of cars to spend £5k on in general:

A nice Porsche 944 S2 would be a good call too - certainly more usable, but not quite the same goosebumps.

I'm sure an M3 would show either of them a clean pair of heels on the open road, but even such a special sports saloon doesn't have quite the same sense of occasion as a sports car or a GT for me.
