HI Folks,

I have a 500 Chimaera (1996), the car juts had a full service and MOT (and all is well).

I have been told from the place had my service done (one of the most respected TVR specialist in the country) that one of my HT lead will need replacing soon (No. 8 is on its way out as the plastic cover as suffered due to heat).

So I will buy a full set soon and replace, the question is, which one:

1) Genuine HT Lead Set for V8 Classic Range Rover & Disco @ £ 42.00
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-HT-Lead-Set-V8-C...

2) The ones from “performance leads” @ £ 69.00:
http://performanceleads.co.uk/ShowDetails.asp?id=9...

3) Magnecor “Blue” @ around £ 100:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MAGNECOR-IGNITION-HT-LEA...

4) Magnecor “Red” @ around £ 105:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Land-Rover-Defender-Disc...

5) Other => which ones

Basically, we are talking a price range of £ 40 ish to £ 110 ish. The “really respected TVR specialist” (and it is one of the really best ones, if I did put the name on this mail you would almost all agree) told me to buy the “standard ones”, not the Magnecor.

So I am asking you which ones you would go for and why? Is the £ 70 quids between the standard and the Magrecor worth it and why? (I know, I get to choose between Blue and Red, which is slightly more exciting than the standard black…. But except the colour, which ones would you get and why…)

My car is a standard 500 and I am planning to do a couple of Track days this year…

Any sensible and useful input will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Frenchie.

Someone said they'd had problems... the man from Magnecore said it wasn't the leads.

Standard. Even cheaper on ebay and nowt wrong with them. And at that price you can afford to change them like a serviceable item before problems arise.

I went form a tired set of standard to magnicore reds, which I struggled with for a few years. Felt like a new engine, as you expect as the old leads were not in good shape. The problem was that they simply won't stay on reliably, go over a bump and you loose a cylinder. No fun when the king lead randomly falls off for no apparent reason either. I think it's heat related. Finally gave up with them after lead no.8 was found melting on the manifold. 3 years ago I searched for standard ones, but found a set of 10mm ones for just £55 from ebay. The link below is I think the same product, looks like the prices have gone up. These leads fit well, and don't come off. Engine runs strongly, and I can't tell the difference. They are 3 years old, and wipe up well to still look new.

Another vote here for stock leads,

I did have a set of go faster 8mm's one but they fell apart after a few heat cycles

Ordered set of stock leads for 1/4 the price and they work a treat and still going strong

Serious question then, are these expensive leads no better, marginally better or seriously better. I guess this question relates to both performance and longevity

I've heard from multiple sources that the more expensive leads are no better.
