Hi All,

I have just managed to get the noble (2.5 GTO) hooked up to the computer today using the noble software

Can anyone please tell me if the output looks right?

Below is the readings (idle) before resetting the adaptive maps

Below are the readings (idle) after resetting the adaptive maps

Below are the readings (on reving).

Thanks
Steve

I would guess that your lambda sensor for cyls 456 isn't working properly. Hold the revs at about 2500 - the waveforms for both lambda sensors should be like the left one in your third pic.

Thanks for this... What would the expected effect on the car with a faulty lambda sensor?

Thanks
Steve

I didn't think the MBE ECU has adaptive maps.

It cert did something to my car. The revs changed and its no longer lumpy and chugging at low revs. Havent got driving far down the road as the hail stones came down here, so waiting to see how it runs when road drys up.

It most certainly does...

I'm confused here then;

On my Esprits, the GM ECU would "learn" after being reset for the first 30 miles or so of driving. So depending on how you drove during this learning period would influence how the ECU would then control the engine. So the MBE also learns then ?

It does, and I have first hand experience of how it learns when first reset with an air leak.... then the air leak rectified and the car was almost undriveable as it was running so rich. Had to reset the adaptive maps again and all was good !!

I see. I had a look on some other sites and it concurs with what you say, i.e. it's adaptive to sensors as opposed adaptive to driving style as the GM unit. So I see, resetting would clear the sensor adaptation.

I would say that sounds about right....
Seems like the maps keep richening the mixture if a lambda fails and the map has not been tweeked to stop it...
I must hasten to add that I am no expert at all...

So is this the only issue that you would have from a dodgy sensor?

The ECU only takes into ac the lambda info up to something like 3500rpm. Thereafter it doesn't affect the map. When mine went, on more than one occasion,it didn't seem to pick up as well from low revs.
Resetting the adaptives won;t sort the issue as the addative will see again that there is a bogus reading from the defective lambda and compensate accordingly getting you back to square one. When you install the new lambda reset then and it will take account of the correct readings from the new lambda. Essentially if you plug the car into a laptop and watch the readings for the two lambdsa they should both oscillate across a fairly narrow range. If one moves significanly more than the other it could be a sign of a cracked manifold.

Stephen:

Agree with everyone. From your Noble Software screens, your front lambda is shot. The two lambdas should show fairly similar readings and cycling behavior.

Good news is you chose the easiest lambda to replace. Need to remove the IC box to get at the rear lambda. smile)

Also, FWIW, my experience with the mbe 975D is that the a-maps are continuously "learning", and adjust to driving conditions. For example, after day of heavy throttling at the track, my Nob arrives home with a leaner mixture (judging from the color of the exhaust tips)temporarily until the a-maps readjust to street driving conditions. That typically takes a day or two, but resetting the a-maps shortens the relearning process.

Thanks all for the help. I will get one ordered up and clear the adaptive maps after after fitting.

Thanks

Steve,

I have no idea about the readings, but this looks cool imho !

How did you hook it up ?

Do you have any links to the software and/or cabling/adaptor ?

Here you go - software download and guides, and SBD will sell you a suitable cable or make your own using detail on the site. Note this is the MBE software, not Noble's.

Hey,

I have a COM cable in the rear of my car (drivers side just if you open the rear CAM) I assume all nobles must have this. I then bought a COM cable like in the below link (can prob get cheaper on ebay). The Male end connects into the lead on the noble, and the female end into a COM port on my desktop PC.

http://www.maplin.co.uk/serial-rs232-9-pin-male-to...

Just to note: COM ports dont really come on modern laptops, thats why i used my Desktop.

A Tip if you are handy on computers is just to set the desktop on its own then remote desktop in from your laptop. Means you dont need to carry monitor and keyboards etc all over the place. If your computer doesnt have a COM port in the back of it you can buy something like this...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Serial-9-pin-DB9-RS232-M...

I did mess around with USB to COM adaptors to try get it to work on my laptop but could never get the Noble software to pick it up.

You can get the software if you sign up to nobleparts.co.uk, one of the forums in there gives you download link.

Hope this helps

I would check that the Maplin lead has the built in resistors as per the wiring schematic on the SBD website. I am told that you can damage your ECU if they are not part of the cable.
Either way at least you can make an informed choice...

@ anotherdom : thanks for the links !

@ Steve : thanks as well for the links !

About the USB -> com convertor : it works (had it on my Esprit), but you need a convertor with the right chipset (Keyspan xx19 I think)

Will check it all out asap
