Hello,

Has anyone given a car back under consumer credit act - i.e. after half the agreement is paid you can hand the goods back? Did it go smoothly? Were you charged for anything (scuffed alloys is of interest to me, this is the girlfriend's car...)

Car is worth quite a bit less than the finance outstanding it turns out, so we are planning on handing it back. Need a deposit for the next car so don't really want to spend it on clearing the finance up to the settlement figure difference to trade-in value - would still then not have much of a deposit for the new car.

Thanks

I had an astra on finance and handed it back last month (not sure who the finance was with) they charged 60 pounds to come pick it up, the car was in ok condition but the alloys were curbed the wing mirror cover was missing, and there were some snags on the upholstery, they took it in that condition without hastle

Do a google search for the "BVRLA fair wear and tear guide".

It details what is / is not acceptable when handing back your vehicle.

I don't know if such a service exists, but it would be useful to be able to do a pre-assessment check with someone where they tell you what would need sorting. I have never handed back a car myself, but I would imagine that once you have initiated proceedings, and they come to inspect the car, you are then bound to hand it back and pay whatever needs doing.

ETA: Yes, you could use the guide to make that assessment yourself, but an independent assessment would be useful as I am sure also, that finance companies differ in what they class as acceptable.

My wife bought a Mercedes with a loan from Santander, she went to hand it back half way through the contract. Apparently it wasn't normal finance it was a personal loan. Check the paperwork.
