Hi all, if I may pick your brains for a moment...
An ex-housemate left a clapped out old motor round at mine when he suddenly disappeared about a year ago. I subsequently found out he was away with the TA so no problems and I still talk to him. The problem is that he just will not get rid of this car no matter how many times I ask him, the police wont touch it because it is on private property and I don't want to pay to get it scrapped. Is there anything I can do? Cheers

I think you will find that no body is interested i.e. LA/Police because it hasn't been abandoned. There is an owner who you know and he still retains ownership.
Wonder he hasn't been pestered by DVLA re continuation of Licence.
May be different if you can prove it a fire hazard.
Other thing is if on your land send him a letter that you are going to charge him x amount of pounds per week for parking on your land and that you will enforce if no payment made through County Court.

Here`s one to think about. Loosen the sump plug slightly so it drips oil, then ring Environmental Health and see if they have an opinion. Any PHers got an informed opinion on that?
Incidently, Brighton had a huge problem with abandoned cars, so the BiB soon learned a pretty crappy trick - if they removed the petrol cap, the vehicle was then a fire hazard and they could legitimately call us out to remove and impound it. Bad news for me as i was always busy without earning a bean in wages! (Thats why I am now a truckie.)

What car is it ? You'd be surprised at the number of owners clubs for what you consider to be clapped out cars. (like www.mk2cav.com )
Contact owners club and offer any part for offers.
Eventually you'll be left with a shell, which at the current price of scrap metal will be worth something if cut up with an oxy torch, and delivered to a scrap metal dealer.
Before doing this give the guy one letter, recorded/registered delivery. 14 days or I will dispose of it for you. That sort of thing.

Steve,
How come no-one paid you to remove em? Surely if the police use you as a service someone has to pay? dont they?

Oh if only. It was all part of this grand idea for removing the "duty of care" from the Chief Constable. Basically, if you want to do the lucrative crash work, you have to pick up everything on an "owner pays" basis. Therefore no owner, no payment. We are talking three years ago here, and its possible that the outcry from our industry helped to instigate the current policy of "If your name is on the V5, it`s yours". To many times we would be told that the car had been sold to a bloke in the pub by the RO. Complete waste of time.
Worse still would be fatal accident in a third party POS. Spend literally hours at the scene, doing a fairly unpleasant job for no money. Thats why the fully comp drivers get stuck with huge charges if they are involved.
Yeah - life sucks! Thats why i dont do it anymore. Shame, as I really enjoyed the challenge presented by some jobs (must dig out the photos some time)
