Having just spent what seams an absolute fortune on a week away in the sun, I was interested if I was just been as tight as a ducks arse or this was normal (haven't been away on family holiday for 2 years and it seemed a lot cheaper last time).

As a percentage of yearly take home, how much do you spend on your main holiday per person (just travel and accomodation)?

For example I just spent 3% per person (2 adults 2 kids) for 1 week.

2.6% per person of our joint income. If it was just my income then 8% per person.

1 week = 1K as a rough guide, family of 4.

I've a perfectly nice house in the UK and don't see the point in 'going away' to spend more on somewhere nowhere near as good.

The one exception to this being Christmas. Leaving the UK is a sanity purchase but even then I'd never spend more than £2k.

Tight? Yep. As a gnat's chuff.

I've just had my 1st proper holiday for 6 years and I spent 14% of my annual wage on it.

I went to New York for a week.

3% per person seems like a huge amount!

We are going on a 5* luxury 2 week honeymoon in July and spending closer to 1.5% per person based on our joint standar incomes before bonuses.

Seems about right to me, and I doing we would spend as much as that for a normal holiday unless its a lot longer

Are you using gross or net though?

Gross, my figures half.

2 weeks for us (2adults) generally works out £5k - £6k.

Gross for me too. Just worke out that for last year without honeymoon it was more like 5% per person, but that was split over a few

Holidays really don't have to be expensive....you just have to shop around, me & a mate of mine went to Barcelona, flights including taxes, transfers & 5 days in a 5* hotel was £200, OK we went in October, but the weather was glorious & we probably did'nt spend more than a couple hundred quid on food & drinks!

Depends where you want to go, i dont go away much but when i do i make it worthwhile. 3 weeks in an RV in California is £1300 per person plus spending money this year.

Percentages are scary, probably about 7% of my gross goes on a two week holiday each year when you include spending money. Honeymoon this year probably closer to 20%...

I can't do percentages but the holiday this year, thanks to "Summer Holiday Tax" prices will work out about 14-15% of nett including spending money for 2 weeks and that's for 5 of us.

The original plan was far cheaper (1 week, shared pool) but August necessitates a private pooled villa because of the (potential)heat.

However, I figured two weeks would cut down the overall cost of flights as we normally do two separate holidays for a week earlier and later (both cheaper)and did 3 last year (stupid really).

In fact it was the third and worst - where it rained a lot - that prompted a more expensive but safer "one shot deal" weather bet this year.

It is a real struggle though, paying everything in one load and the f******g airline credit card surcharge of £45 (Thanks for nothing Thomson) doesn't help one bit.

If they ever introduce a scheme to get those rip-off charges back like the did with PPP, I'll be rich....and as you can see, I'm not resentful or bitter about them at all (thieving feckers).

About 2% of gross went on a week in the Maldives in October. About 1% on a week in Val d'Isere last week and about 1% on two weeks in Tuscany each July (friend's villa, but we go to town).

I did the same in December; went to Hawaii though. Just myself; accommodation was free (timeshare) but flights, car and spending money came to about 10% all in. Worth every penny as well smile

I reckon I've spent approx 20% of my net base salary in the past year on traveling. I also spent 3 months solid on 24x7 on-call where I couldn't go further than 30mins away from home, so that more than covered the costs.

Depends year by year really, we usually go to the states which is expensive enough.

Spent 3 weeks in Orlando and Miami last October and by the time you add spending money etc its a scary amount of money, but my wife son and I love the place so you have to take the cost of it on the chin and get on with it.

We did however realise after our recent visit that after spending the last 10 years going here we have done everything many times over, we are now stuck with where do we go next that will have the same vast range of activities that Orlando offers.
