There's a shed load of different stuff for that money - hell there's 800 cars on Autotrader within 10 miles of me that fit the <£1k criteria.
If it has to be small - early Toyota Yaris
If it has to be bigger - old old shape Civic
If you don't really care about Japanese or breaking down, Alfa 156
You could get a high mile C-class or e36 3-series if you wanted...

When I was a bit younger than that I had just lost all my Ncb, and bought an old E46 323ci.
Was dirt cheap to buy and to run. Had it for 18 months. Took it to France and back with mates
Had a local BMW specialist who kept it on good nick cheaply and when I sold it it went for a very good price within 4 hours of listing it on here.
Have since had an E36 328ci, and wouldn't hesitate going back to either if I needed the space
