I have a meeting on Tuesday afternoon in Wimbledon, and a meeting on Wednesday morning in Aston.

As such, plan is to leave Wimbledon late Tuesday, approx 5-7pm (not sure!) to head North to Brum so that i don't have to travel a big distance on Weds AM.

Obviously, driving to Aston would be the preferred as i could get a local hotel and then have a bit of a lie-in.

An option however may be to drive 1/2 way or 2/3s of the way, to perhaps Banbury or somewhere on the M40. Just don't want to be spending the whole night driving on Tues (and if i leave at 7pm it'll be a long day) and then again don't want a massive drive on Weds AM.

Any thoughts to decent hotels in the Birmingham area? I'm talking cheapish too - up to say £75. Travelodge and Premier Inn fine, i'm not after the Ritz and looking for clean and basic - don't want to drive out of my way for the scenery and to visit local landmarks. It's business travel and any time not working, driving or having a meal will be chilling in the room with a book or a bit of telly.

What I can say is don't use the Premier Inn at Aston. The last time I stayed there (although it was a while ago now) it was looking very tired and smelt very fusty frown

TBF it may have had a refurb since I was last there though.

What time do you need to be at your meeting in Aston on the morning ?

There's loads of hotels around Birmingham but getting around the city in rush hour can be horiffic - even if you don't need to go far.

If you need to be at the meeting between 8-9.30 am don't stay too far away from the venue. Otherwise I'd be looking for somewhere a bit further out as it will be cheaper and probably a nicer environment too.

There's loads of cheap hotels on the Hagley road on the other side of town - not that far away.

Thanks.

Need to be there at 9.30am for a 10am start. So not really any earlier than 9.30.

I get up early at home with the children so not one for lie-in's, but always make the most of a hotel breakfast if i can to get me through the day so try to avoid the ones where brekkie is served from 8.30am onwards (i.e. those not living in the real world!).

Could perhaps head for somewhere on Hagley Road that does brekkie from say 7.30 or so and can be on my way for 8.30am maybe, assume that'd get me there and parked for 9.30am?

The place is called Conference Aston or something like that.

Booked.

Eaton on Hagley Road looked nice but seemed a bit too 'boss sucks air through when i put in receipt' in terms of price.

So, nearly booked in at Bloc in Jewellery quarter. Looks a bit 'trendy' which is no longer me but cheap and cheerful. No brekkie or parking included.

But, seemed to be noticing places getting booked up quick so asked one of the girls in the office to find me something.

Brief:

- Not too clinical
- Not a s**thole
- Not too pricey that boss will moan
- Not too close to a motorway that i feel like im sleeping at a service station

So, she's booked me in the Campanile next to a dual carriageway.

Other than the £55 a night inc B&B and parking price, i think she's missed everything else on my wanted list but never mind, it's going to save me nearly 4 hours of travel over a couple of days.

Surprising about the price comment on the Eaton as they've been doing us a good rate for donkey's years. Is your boss a cheapskate.

55 quid you are at bottom end of market tbh.

What about Copthorne? £69 or is that still too expensive?
Hampton Inn at Stab City... errr Star City?

No, they're pretty good money-wise.

I just don't like to go too steep and to be honest, this one is drive-able for me, at a push, so not going mad.

I know, not paid as low as £55 for a hotel for a good while but will see how it is.

Please get here to cancel it. Sleeping in the car under Spaghetti junction would be a nicer experience...seriously!!!

You might try the new T/Lodge off Newhall Street in the CC - close to the Jewellery Qtr? I think the rates are quite good as long as you book in advance & there are also a good number of places to eat nearby.
