Classic Insurance: "Must be kept garaged"

Hello everyone,

Summer seems to be coming so I'm getting my pride and joy out of storage soon and was planning to take her for an extended spin around the country to visit a few mates. For some reason this got me thinking about the fact that my policy states the car must be "kept garaged" and I'm not really sure what that means. It does live in a garage most of the time but will sometimes visit the shops, sit on someone else's drive for a bit etc. I presume that's ok.

This road trip will involve it being parked on a hotel forecourt (right in front of the concierges station, one night) and on a mates drive (on a private road, two nights). So what does "kept garaged" really mean? Would I be in breach of it by doing the above or is there some sort of rule that "kept garaged" really means "spends most of it's time garaged". I was going to give the insurers a call but I thought it would be sensible to gather opinions here first to avoid being stung. I imagine I could get day insurance if I really had to but the thought of having to do that every time I took it out for any length of time is not something I like the sound of.

It varies. It might give more details in your policy booklet.

Phone and ask them - only way to be sure you're covered.

I've got a similar policy. If the car is at home then it needs to be garaged from 8pm.

If i've taken the car away then obvioulsy it can't be in the garage. It only applies when you are at your home address.

But, read your policy just in case.

I have mine with Heritage and it's fine to leave it outside, good news as we don't have a garage.

I garage mine away from home and my policy says the if it is parked within a certain distance from my home (or the garage) between 10pm and 6am, it needs to be garaged.

Mine says the same - If the car's within X miles of my home address, it needs to be garaged between certain times (normally 10pm til 6am)

Mine definitely isn't like that and there is probably quite a few people who have gone for a "kept garaged" policy as their car is in storage but who don't have a garage at home. I guess they pay a low premium whilst it's in storage and then get a requote / adjustment / short-term insurance for when it's sitting on their drive.

I think it was previously insured with Footman James and they weren't concerned that it wasn't garaged either. Both companies knew that it's left outside in the road.
