...of getting shafted by the various "powers that be", so I've applied for CID.

Better hours, more chance of overtime, a job the general public actually think is worthwhile, and you get treated like a grown up while you're at work.

Wonder if I'll get paper sifted, and through to the interview stage?

Blimey - why would anyone want to do that??? Think about the paperwork, the knobby elitist sub-culture, the lack of SPP!!

Not trying to put you off or anything

Well you could always request a transfer to the "licensing" section and spend working hours "tired and emotional."

I've got this mental image of Dibble in leather coat in front of bedroom mirror practising....

Was that Ronald Reagan in "Bedtime for Bonzo"?

Dibble - forget "Sherlock", he wasn't a policeman; try "Eliott_Ness" or, closer to home: "Charlie_Barlow", "Battle_of_the_Yard" or "Lockhart".

I've often wondered about CID.

Are the cheap suits standard issue or is it a hive mind of poor taste?

I shan't find out for another couple of weeks whether or not I've been short listed for interview (although my snout tells me I should get through the paper sift...). Even if I get through the interview, there are no actual vacancies at present, these are interviews for projected vacancies, so even if successful it might be another three years before there’s any movement.

I'd rather stay on Traffic, but the problem is the continual downsizing and deskilling of traffic departments. At the moment, we're almost completely reactive, and it's rare to actually go and do something proactive.

I currently have 3 or four injury files on the go, am assisting with two fatals, and am expected to answer the radio for everything - shoplifters, domestics, pub fights, lost children etc etc. I don't have a particular problem with this, but it's a bit of a piss take when you get a bollocking for not self generating enough process...

I can't see this changing much in the near future. Automated detection like ANPR, the use of GATSO and civilian camera technicians, Highways Agency staff, are all eroding our core work. Sure, you don't need to pay someone £30k to shift a bit of tyre from Lane 3, but the officers freed up by civilianisation ARE NOT staying in traffic posts - they're being redeployed to the "Make Old Mrs Mingins and Her Kitty Tibbles Feel Safe Squad."

CID? Monday-Friday, 8am-4pm. Most weekends off, nights cover one, maybe two weeks a year. Better status, inside and outside the Police, and support from your line managers. About as much overtime as you want to work (so that cancels out losing SPP).

Traffic? Permanent shifts, usually single crewed. Overtime - no chance. No support from your line manager - mainly because they work 8-4 days. Abuse from the public when you stop them, even if it's just for advice - after all, it's OUR fault they got GATSO'd. Poorly equipped, training a rarity. One Friday off every five weeks, a weekend and a bit off in the same time.

Which would you choose?

and this was where my marriage started to go down the pan. We were fine, he worked shifts, I worked weekends - two days a month off together. He then went into CID (and later Fraud Squad) I got a job with weekends off - suddenly no me time.

Ach Liebchen!

This is such a shame - but LanCASH£re and its 300 plus scams ... and increasing casualties despite their claims to contrary!

Such fools!

Und another good traffic cop moves off into sunset of CID!

Tell me - are you planning to be Kojak? Nah! Zat ist gone - I have surreal images of that one!

I know! The one who always got the bus to his shouts as detective - cannot remember his name or the series but he played the blok in the Fugitive as well - (not thsat old - honest -
there was re-run on the rtelly a few years ago - honest!

Blimey! Those are better hours than I have! No wonder I cannot get them to sort out the burglaries!

Sounds like the NHS!

Shifts, no support from those managers and my poor cousin in A&E never gets time to take a leak either! And of course - it is all his fault that they had an accident in the home, fell off their bike, got drunk, took overdose of heroin - which as we all know DICKY in case you are reading - "is not very dangerous"
