At some point I'm considering purchasing either an S2000 AP2 or a BMW Z4 3.0. I'm interested to hear from people who have driven these cars on a blast, people who get into a car and immediately turn off the DSC, ASC or what have you and drive it like it was meant to be driven. I used to own an E46 M3 and 10/10ths driving in it was an incredibly rewarding experience and I'm keen to get back to similar levels of reward when pressing on. Default PH mode says MX5 1.8 sport, complete with LSD, but I just don't think it will feel quick enough since my other half's late SLK 200K feels quite slow to me.

So, which can reward more highly, the S2000 or the Z4?

Thanks in advance.

didn't even read your post and I'm not even a fan of the s2000 but surely it's the Honda all day long?!

I think possibly it is the S2000, but the Z4 is quicker and has more torque, plus BMWs, to me, generally have pretty good steering and the pedals seem well weighted and where you expect them to be for heel and toe. With all of those things going for it I thought the Z4 might still be in with a shout.

I prefer the S2000, the Z4 is a bit softer when pushing it.

S2000. Watch the video of gan-san driving it around the ring, properly quick in the hands of a good driver.

Test them

I didn't fit in the s2000. So for me the better car was the Z4.

But I really did try and make the s2000 fit and would have forgiven it almost any discomfort for that engine and balance. Why didn't they fit an adjustable steering column...

By the way OP, AP2 are Jap/US only, ALL UK models are AP1.

The S2000 had a major makover/facelift at some point, a lot of people think that this is the AP1/AP2 changeover.
It's not, but most people will understand what you mean.

As mentioned above AP1, AP2 are US designations.
(although, some people will tell you some UK cars have some AP2 parts).

Anyhow.. . . .

S2000, very Raw, very fast. Excellent sports car.
It's a bit of hard work as a daily drive in the winter.

Z4 is probably a lot easier to live wih all year, but not as much fun as a sportscar.

If it's a second car for sunny days and holidays get an S, if it's a daily drive I'd suggest you take a closer look at the BMW.

I'd say later S2000 > Z4 > early S2000 (I don't know exactly what AP2 means). However, I'd have a mk3 MR2, an MX5 or a Boxster over either and an Elise or VX220 over any of them.

It will be used for winter and wet drives to work since I've got an R1 for the rest of the time. smile

VX & Elise are just a little too fragile and hardcore since the wife will be driving it occasionally too.

The Boxster seems like it could have some potentially ruinous issues up it's sleeve, which completely puts me off.

As a 10/10ths cars, it has to be the S2000.

As an everyday car I think the 3.0si has a lot going for it. At the time I couldn't stretch to the si and didn't want the non-si. I've had the S2000 for 3.5 years now and until I can afford a 4.7 V8V, it's not going anywhere.

I havent driven a S2000 but I had a 3.0 Z4. and I can tell you that the first thing is get rid of the runflats for pushing the car. they make it tram line, and break away with very little warning. also the bump control at high speed isn't great and can be quite un-nerving. they sound great though.

I would be tempted by a AWD performance car if its sole purpose is for bad weather times.

Have you got the figures for that?

From what I can see the Honda is lighter and more powerful.

Ahh, but it's not ultimate performance I'm after, it's ultimate reward. The M3 had fantastic rear wheel steering, wink which I think an AWD car would struggle to beat.
