I need to go to Gutersloh in a big thirsty van. I'll be leaving shortly, to exchange some faulty goods tomorrow morning, and straight back.

I used to do quite a lot of European work, but this is the first time for a couple of years.

Where is currently the best bet for cheap fags, beer and diesel on the way. I'll need diesel at least 5 times, so I'd like at least 2 of them to be cheap.

I think Luxembourg is cheapest for fuel at the moment.

Luxembourg for the fuel if you can route via there.

Steer clear of French and Belgium motorway services their prices are daft compared to dropping off the motorway.

Belgium for fags, or Luxembourg again.

Any French/Belgium hypermarket will be good for continental beer. One of the traders at Calais like Eastenders will be good for other beer.

Germany is very pricey on fuel, more than uk in many place.

Andorra is cheap for all of the above. Bit of a mission though! Plus iirc the amount of stuff you can take out makes it not worthwhile.

Aye, no problem. Aren't Lamberts a bit common, though?

It's not really on the way from Bristol to Gutersloh, either. We used to pick collect fireplaces from a town on the French/Spanish border, though.

I know, hence the 'mission'. biggrin

I went last while visiting a mate who lives in Barcelona. Had a road trip to the Pyrenees and a couple of nights in Andorra. Was summer so no skiing but appears to be quite a popular place for hill walking and cycling.

Eastenders closed a couple of years ago, IIRC.

Yes yes, you go past wkum too, and Titz is only a minor detour... smile

Anyway. Belgium cheapest for Diesel, but drop off the main roads. literally 15c/litre cheaper in some places. We paid €1.32/litre a few weeks back. Same in Netherlands, but it's slightly more expensive - again off the main routes €1.36 ish seems to be about right (well it was last week). I filled up just outside Düsseldorf in Germany on Wednesday and was pleased with €1.46, but around €1.60 is more normal on the autobahns.

I'm not a smoker so can't help there, but the big supermarkets in France are usually the best bet for cheap beer. If you are a wine drinker, do pop on in on a German supermarket or two. We have an excellent domestic wine industry, but tend not to export the good stuff. The beer is very good too (and cheap - a case of 20 premium half litre bottles is €10), but you have to pay €3.10 deposit for each case, so that obviously bumps the price up if you are not intending to return too often.

Edit: Ha! PH censored a placename! W A N K U M. And I'm not cursing biggrin

The sign was lit last weekend when I drove past. I didn't stop though was pressed for time. There was another place a little further on if you passed the big oddbins.

Belgium is therefore a fair bit more expensive than Luxembourg. Off the motorway and away from remich you'll pay €1.20.

No.

The strength of the Swiss franc stopped that.

Which is fine, but the OP is not going anywhere near Luxembourg. Irrelevant now, I expect he is on his way already smile

Nah, colleague paid €1.36 in Roermond on Wednesday - unmanned place with 10c korting or whatever it's called.

Bit of an update. There was a bit more running around to do than I expected, so I didn't always have time to get off the main roads for diesel.

The least I paid was €1.40 in Belgium, the most €1.50 in France. Fags and beer in Adinkerke were cheap.

I did 1389 miles at an average of 20.3mpg and 51mph. I didn't get back on Saturday night, either.

I'd forgotten how boring motorways are in Belgium, Holland and Germany. Any time you get near a town, there are huge, graffiti covered sound barriers. All you see are fields or these barriers.
