Dunno, but I bet it's something to do with aerodynamics & fuel efficiency!

It will be some aerodynamic device to control airflow around the rear

I'd guess that, too.

It'll be a little aero tweak to help clean up the flow around the rump. Hideous, but probably gets a tiny amount of benefit somewhere.

Saw a "Chevrolet" dullbox the other day, and it just looked like they'd stuck a couple of toblerones on the rear window for the same purpose.

Mini's have them moulded into the back of the C-pillar.

If that were my Civic I'd get them off on the first day, what an eyesore!

Okay, So part 2 of my question. Why an ugly stick on bit and not something in the 'New' design?

Edit:

Cheaper & you don't have to tool up for a sheet metal change. Plus, owners can peel them off when they get homebiggrin

Also, they might be a UK only spec thing.

They probably homologated the car, and the CO2 result just put it into a higher UK / European tax bracket than they would have liked. By fitting those horrible "break away" turbulence tabs they will have demonstrated a slight reduction in roadload and re homologated at that lower load and got a better CO2 result.
