Petrolheads in your peer group

So me and my group of friends are all in the 29-32 bracket.

Most of us after passing our tests and well into our twenties had what you'd call a "performance car" of some sort.

Over the years between us we've owned

R5 Turbo
328i
couple of Saxo VTRs
Saxo VTS
1.8 16v XR2i
a smattering of Imprezas in WRX and STi flavours
R34 GT-R
Daihatsu Charade Turbo
EG6 Civic VTi
MR2 Turbo
VR6 Corrado
Golf GTi
CRX
RX7
NSX

etc etc

Roll on to today and only two of us out of our peergroup of say 20 guys still have quick cars, myself with an MR2 Turbo and a mate who has a minor collection going on of an NSX, an RX7 and a CRX(greedy bugger!)

One of the group has moved onto bikes, having had a GSXR600 after passing his test 2 years ago, which was then traded in for an R1 last summer.

Are you in the minority in your peer group? Do your mates all still have performance cars?

I know a few people my age (21-22) with interesting/performance cars:

Clio Trophy (mine)
BMW 135i remapped (380bhp!)
Clio 197 R27
Mk5 R32
Lotus Elan 2+2

Hopefully this will improve as we graduate/get full time jobs.

Also know a load of people with expensive/new but incredibly dull cars.

Only two people in my peer group (21-25) have had interesting cars. One has a 987 Boxster, and another has both a Ferrari 360 Spider and a modified BMW M6 (though that friend has those cars purely for showing off rather than driving ).

Then again, I don't exactly have a lot of petrol head friends, so it's perhaps of no surprise that few of them have had fun cars

Yes, hopefully it will. Imagine a bunch of people at Uni only having Mk5 R32's and 400bhp 135i's. It'll just never do, the sooner you get full time jobs and buy proper cars the better.

All my mates at Uni had 911 Turbos.

I think young petrolheads seem to be a dying breed. I work with a lot of guys in the 19-24 age bracket and they all aspire to own diesel Audis and VWs on finance - 10 years ago they might have had the imagination to be get something interesting!

Don't get me wrong there are nice cars there, I meant more that I hope I'll get something more potent and that a few more of my friends get into decent cars, not that the 135i and R32 owners should get their act together!

I share a house with friends, we're all petrolheads but this year have lost about 400 bhp from our driveway!!


Also have a good friend who recently bought is first house, him and his girlfriend have gone from having a Boxster S and an MR2 to having 2 1.4 Corsas!


These aren't petrolhead times. :-(

I met most of my friends through cars in one way or another so they generally own something interesting in one way or another. I do have a couple who claim to be into cars but haven't ever bothered with anything quicker than a 120d.

Of my three closest mates, one has never passed his driving test, one has no interest in cars beyond A-B and the other has a 2011 997 which replaced a Cayman. We're all late 30's early 40's.

Not one of my friends are into cars. Of the 12 of us who meet up for beer and the odd fishing trip, not a single one gives a monkeys hoot about motors. The thing is as well, 5 of them are Engineers. They all think Im a bit mad running around in old motors with 4 litre engines with superchargers, turbos,straight 6's.

I'm 41 married with kids, all of my peers think I'm off my rocker to run a 330ci, sad thing is ill be joining them in their dull as dogsh*t family type cars, next purchase will be more practical and cheaper to run, past two anti car govermants have finaly worn me down I'm afraid.

true I have noticed this as well, had a right argument with one who after talking about getting meganes/vxrs when he landed a well paid full time job bought a diesel fiesta and now all he does is blab on about its 70 mpg

My 4 best mates were all members of the Morgan owners club, & raced Morgans against each other, before moving on to Formula 3s, 2s & one to an F1.

We went through the large family cars, & big 4WDs for towing boats etc.

Now our personal cars are;
Aston DB4,
Morgan +8,
Triumph TR8.
Honda S2000.

No sense getting old, if you don't get lucky.
