Looking into next car purchase but can't make up my mind between ordering new Boxster S, a used Spyder or Cayman R. I have just sold my E63 Amg so trying to find a balance between driving fun and least depreciation. Have already owned a Cayman S & 9ll Carrera 2 PDK but still can't decide on what to go for!

Least depreciation? Not the new boxster IMO..

Personally out of the three I'd actually pick the new boxster. Roof off driving offers more to me than i feel the Cayman would, and the Spyder roof is too fiddley

New Boxster will be a fab car, but needs £50k+. Cayman R - great car, not sure how much better it is than a sorted Cayman S though. Can be had for approx £40k+. The most special looking, and probably the quickest, is the Spyder. It's also the cheapest, and will hold it's value the best out of the 3, if that is a concern to you.

Spyder wins then smile

considered a Spyder but I dont think the UK has the right climate, the roof is just so annoying (on your own its a nightmare!) However will depreciate the least IMO...
Just bought a Boxster 3.4s Pdk for the mrs & I must say its a brilliant drive, the new one must be superb...
I would go new Boxter at 50kish & sure it may cost u a little more in depreciation than the others but thats the price you pay for putting driving pleasure ahead of depreciation!

It's really not a nightmare. Granted it's not as efficient as a Boxster but I can do it in less than a minute on my own without breaking sweat.

I have to disagree, I found the roof extremely annoying. Unbearable noise on motorways and a pain in the a@se to put up and down. No way it goes up or down in under a minute!!! Great car ruined by a gimmicky roof.

Dont get me wrong I really do love the Spyder but the roof puts me off, I just cant see myself bothered enough to take the roof off unless I know for sure that its gonna be a beautiful day... and that aint easy in the UK!!

I would put £20k into a 987 Boxster 3.4s - will probably only lose 2-3k a year for the next 4 years, lovely to drive, and a roof that can be operated up to 40mph perfect for the occasional bit of nice weather we have in the uk

I don't really disagree as regards to noise and it being a pain in the arse but it's easy under a minute when you know what you're doing and it arguably makes the car as opposed to ruin it ( in a masochistic sort of way)!

I agree it can be done in under an minute with practise; I had it down to just a couple of mins with only a few goes (extended test drive), however my main issue with the roof is the noise (much noisier than with the roof off) plus the way it is designed, just looks a bit silly and for those of us without a garage, the roof will be on more than it ideally should. That is the only thing that takes away from what is an absolutely fantastic car, and maybe my only reservation of having one myself, though I dearly would love one otherwise.

I'm also torn on these car choices too; Cayman R actually gave me more of a buzz than the Spyder (though I'm unsure why, maybe a better spec at the time) but the rear just looks a little funny to me; the new Boxster I'll have a better idea about on Friday.

New Boxster will depreciate massively, just like those of old, because they are mass produced; probably lose £20k in 2-3 years! Think the Cayman R will also lose quite a lot, though can be picked up for a reasonable price (£40k) now; Spyder will hold value better, so few of them about.

I'd forego the ease of roof operation for the looks of the Spyder. Great car.

Mine lives in the garage with the roof off. I only even store the roof in the car if I'm out for the day and and unsure of the weather.

Never had the roof on mine yet, I keep it in a wardrobe to save weight.

if it,s your only car get a Cayman R but expect to lose a few £. But you would lose most on a new boxster by miles.

I had a cayman s and the R feels much better.

The spyder is one of the best cars Porsche have made, and prob the best handling car they have ever made, it s sure is the lightest they have made for many a year.

It,s a very under rated car, forget the roof, I guess Porsche had to fit one for some EU ruling , the car ment to be used with no roof.
If you want a roof buy a normal Boxster.

You need to know what the Spyer is about, sadly, most have had the wight put back in them which is a shame but take a light weight out on track for a drive and it,s epic.

As for Spyder pricing, no idea,it,s good enough to be up there with the best, but I doubt it will unless more people get a go in one and of course it's not a 911. (but that's a good thing regarding the drive, just not to good regarding going up in value)

Only car, well no way not in real Spyder 1250kg spec and not with that roof,
But one of the best drivers/funs car to own as a 2nd car with out question.

To Answer the op,s question, , buy a Cayman R and expect to lose a few £ , but it will prob be worth it.

This ^

It's ALL about the roof. Or more to the fact that the car was made to be at it's best without it. This is a car designed to be enjoyed without it's roof whenever possible. It is not supposed to be a practical all round machine. Ferrari have been doing this sort of st for years and never get any stick for it and their excuses for roofs on these cars make the Porsche effort look like a masterpiece. Hmmm pretty:

OMFG!
Is that real?
My eyes , my eyes!

The Spyder roof is a nightmare , don`t believe any other posts , it needs at least four people experienced in erecting tents , a venn diagram and half of your life to put up - in fact all other owners should scrap their cars immediately and no one should buy another one ever , until I sell mine due to sudden onset idiocy.
I estimate a value of a million or so quids.

I've probably had the roof on and off my car a few times only. A few goes and you're pretty much an expert.

Same as Mr Demon I mostly keep the roof in the garage.

If you cannot afford to lose £20k in costs, don't get buying any of the cars you have listed.

As for what you buy, we got alot of threads like this one, just book a day at Porsche Silverstone to get answers.

I would accept there is wind noise at motorway speed, but it is liveable, bearing in mind you buy the car for the times the roof is off.

The roof keeps all water out.

The roof can easily be put up or taken down by one person in under a minute. (I feel a YouTube video coming on to prove it).

I wonder about people who find it difficult.
