I'm looking at 2x 996 C4S (approx £21k) one of which has sat nav and PSE and the other has neither. How much extra are these 2 options worth now when it comes to buy/sell?

Vintage sat-nav probably worth nowt, PSE is worth having, say £1k

Why spend £21k on a 996 when the 997 can be had from £20k?

PCM and PSE can be retrofitted, the former is (as far as I'm aware) not something ordinarily retrofitted but could be for a price (expect £3k+). PSE is retrofitted to Porsches all the time.

Personally lack of PCM would be a deal breaker for me on buying a Porsche. Purists will argue differently.

Thanks for the quick replies. When buying a car I think about what I want but also having an appropriate spec to make it easier to sell in 2-5 years' time.

So what you're collectively saying is that an old sat nav is somewhere between being little better than a road atlas >>> compulsory spec; and that a C4S without a PSE is comparing shandy to real ale and I should pay a substantial premium.

I've seen the 997 on PH for <£20k but for my driving style and the roads I drive on, I want 4WD in a fast road car and have done so for the last 15 years.

Old Porsche satnavs are utterly useless, they were pretty rubbish when the cars were new and hugely over-priced. I really would not worry about the presence or otherwise of one in a 996. And when you come to sell on they will be even older and even more useless! Car service history MUCH MUCH more important.

Actually I would not bother with one if I were buying new but thats just me - TomToms are far better, you can update them without major OPC hassle and they have speed cameras on.

Post up the links to the 996s and get some views from the PH community.

Doesn't make a real difference when trading in, maybe a £1-1.5k on top from indies

PSE essential on 996 C4s. I have one and it sounds like a hairdryer when switched off, but a lovely roar when on. Search on you tube for comparison vids

As mentioned above satnav is rubbish - doesn't even allow input of a postcode!

Think about your enjoyment of the car as opposed to what you can sell it for - otherwise it defeats the whole object of buying it. Vanilla 996 and 997s do not make good investments. If I sold mine now most likely I'd lose 10k, and that's after 1 year

PCM was actually asked by every indie I spoke too, makes dash look better but is cack. You see them on ebay sometimes.

Of course if we stopped demanding it they would stop insisting it was essential for a trade in. Save yourselves loads of money and fit a TomTom. Porsche will then have to drop the cost of the blasted thing as it is stupidly over-priced.

This was pretty much the point I was skirting around making.

PCM is more than just satnav (calling it perfunctory would be gracious), it performs other functions and taken as a whole adds a certain je ne sais quoi to the driver zone. There is evidence to suggest people looking to buy a car of this ilk would expect to see it fitted. Not always, and not every buyer, and certain Porsches get away with not having it (e.g. GT3, etc) but I personally regard it as "expected equipment" on a daily driver Porsche.

^^this.

It's nice to have the screen there. Even when it's off, it gives the facia a 'lift'.

I rarely use sat-nav so there would be no point in me owning an aftermarket one, but it's handy to have the PCM/Sat-Nav there on the odd occasion that I need it. Plus, aftermarket ones look so untidy (I like my cabin to be immaculate).

Well spotted. That's the cheapest I've ever seen presuming its not Cat D or something.

I thought it must be "wrong" in some way or other, but if not, it's a lot of car for £20k.
