RE: Delayed Running In Service - E92 M3 - Concerns ?
Discussion
Hello All,
About to purchase a new E92 M3 this week with a bit of luck. The car i have my eye on is a 58 plate, 2 owner car DCT car with a loaded spec and full BMWSH.
Only concern is that the running in service was performed at 2200 miles - from what I know on the forums this is definately late but how crucial is this and should I be worried ?
Iv heard that this may prevent the car ever being considered as AUC by BMW but this is not something I am worried about - more interested to know whether this would prevent it ever being qualified for the BMW warranty scheme? Also do I have my facts correct that the running in service should have been done before '1800 miles' (iv seen some members quote 1200) and has there been any cases of mechanical / engine implications from this type of delay (one would think not having it done at all would be the kiss of death so at least its been carried out)
N.B: The oil change / running service was carried out at a main dealer and the history since then has been on the money.
Anyone who has / does work for BMW would be really useful but all advice much appreciated.
Thanks

I thought the running in service on M cars was due at 1200 miles, that was definitely the case with I6 cars, (it may be different for V8/10's but I would not image so) and the max allowance was upto 1800 miles and anything over this was clased as overdue.
As far as BMW Insured warranty goes imo it's best to get an answer direct from the horses mouth on this question, give them a call on 0208 6669204, usual business hours.

Flush diff and change the fluid from running in grade fluid to regular diff oil. The original fluid is designed to get rid of any metal burrs which might damamge the diff in the long run. At 1200 miles they drain it and flush through to remove any swarf. Fresh fluid is then added. Other checks are carried out tbut the main one is the diff.
thanks for the advice guys, think i will definately contact BMW and see if they would still do warranty cover based on the car details etc and go from there
Apart from issues coming to sell the car, does anyone have any other evidence to suggest that the delayed 1000 miles or so covered would have a detrimental effect on the engine ?
thanks

i thought they changed the engine oil? might be wrong.
unless you're intending to keep it for quite some time, and/or it's a good bit cheaper, i'd definitely walk away. it'll be difficult to shift.
For my 6MT they changed the diff, tranny and engine oil at the break-in service. Cant remember if for DCT whether or not they do the same for the transmission fluid.unless you're intending to keep it for quite some time, and/or it's a good bit cheaper, i'd definitely walk away. it'll be difficult to shift.
Hi, if we got offered an M car that had 2200 miles on for the running in check we would bid it very low. We also wouldn't be able to retail the car either as it falls outside the guidelines set down by BMW so therefore the warranty would be invalid too. Walk away as it will only prove to be a problem later when you come to sell it as its one of the first things people looking at M cars want to know.
Hi guys,
Just checked this morning with BMW warranty and they have no problems with having a full warranty including engine applied to this car despite the late RIS.
Apparently so long as rest of service history is sound (and from main dealer) and no problems associated claims, then 600 extra miles is not a problem.
So taking this into account and the extra peace of mind it offer's both me and future buyer do you think this makes the extra bit of difference in feeing confident to buy the car ?

Hi,
Decided in the end not to buy the car as my gut told me to hold fire and be patient for the 'right' car - after all what the point in compromising for something that we all value so much. Plus Jerez Black was not my preferred colour.
Thanks for all your advice - if anyone knows or is keen to sell a well specced DCT car in Space Grey or Silverstone II then please do get in touch with me as eager to purchase quickly.
thanks
