I saw this the other day, and was intrigued by it, referring back to a reading of one of Pumaracing's posts on valve seats which had diversified somewhat and mentioned inlet charge skipping past the short side of the valve seat and trying to modify the head to prevent this.

This Valve is rather large, no idea what its from though, but would the shaped (or a shaped piece) in this fashion be of assistance in a high performance car engine?
I have just laid out a considerable sum for four bespoke exhaust valves made from a posh superalloy....now i'm thinking this might be worth some flow-testing on the inlet side....

That's weird, I like it! Where did you find the pic?

It can't be from a combustion engine can it? It would have to be fixed in place from rotating - which going by the threads on the end it is. If it was it wouldn't be on the inlet, i'm wondering if it's to stop reversal on the exhaust?

Looking forward to a proper answer....

I took the picture. The valve is the largest of a set on display at the place I buy all of my OE components...gasket sets, engine bearings, sealants, pistons and the like. They are an engine component supplier. The set of valves in the cabinet goes from a tiny little dinky valve all the way up to this whopper with about six in between.

Engineering a bespoke valve in this style, I would imagine wouldn't take much extra work to prevent it rotating, would the extra weight pose an issue I wonder?
My mind suggests something like this, if you'll excuse the crudity, with a shaped scoop sat on the valve directing air to the short side of the seat.

...actually, having thought about it, the valve is open and protruding into the cylinder....maybe a rethink required here!

Does that not massively reduce the curtain area though?

It's probably from a Cummins, Gardner or AEC diesel engine from the 70's / 80's.
