Got a dilemma.
Discussion
After a bit of feedback as this is a bit of tricky one.
My Mum has decided to sell her 2004 2.3 Mazda 6. Someone else in the family has bought a new car (which they're picking up on Thursday) and they're old car is a mint example of what she's after so she's decided to buy it off them and get rid of her own.
Problem is, selling wise it's not going to attract much attention or appeal to many: It's a 2.3 so with petrol prices going as they are it's already going to put a lot off before they even look at it.
It's due an MOT the end of May and my Mum thinks the brakes will need some work doing, it needs 3 new tyres, like every other Mazda 6 out there it has rust above the real wheel arches, finally it has damage on the front nearside of the bumper and wing due to some plonk catching it in the car park which has also started to rust.
So the options are: She spends the money getting the tyres, MOT and body work repaired to sell privately but is she going to see a return on her money?
She sells it to We Buy Any Car, which before she told me about this, is what she was planning to do. They've offered her £1400 for it but I warned her that when she takes it down for an inspection it will be more like £1100. There is another company which do the same thing with a better name that's been mentioned on here before but I can't remember the name of it.
She sells it to another trader but I know they need to make a profit so probably won't offer much more than WBAC or won't be interested at all.
She gets a new MOT on it and sells it on Ebay on a free listing weekend with a reserve of what WBAC have offered her. This I think is her best option but she knows nothing about Ebay so she's a little uneasy about it.
I've posted some pictures below so the feedback is as accurate as possible.

I personally think it's a great car and would love to buy it myself but due to my own circumstances I'm unable to.

What year is it? At that (49k) mileage I would assume it should be worth £2.5k-3k + as say an 06 or 07 plate in decent nick. Wouldnt bother with WBAC, bunch of idiots.
It's a 2004, first registred on May 21st I think. I did tell her that privatly I thought it would be worth around 2-3k.TheTurbonator said:

Ebay auction starting at £1500 can't hurt, or fix what bits you can (esp cosmetically) and a classified ad at £2500

Hi OP been looking at the 2.0 versions of these at the mo
The 2.3 seems really unloved , its neither very brisk nor economical and hence I've seen some lovely condition low mileage ones struggle 2-3 grand. I quite like em' and if I was doing lower mileage i'd be tempted by a 2.3 its a lot of car for the money.
If I was you:
Are you sure the brakes need "doing"?
Are the tyres road legal, will they get through the MOT?
I would MOT it and stick it on Ebay with a reserve of WBAYs offer

The tyres are road legal but only just, so I thought it would put a lot of buyers off. I did mention putting part-worns on it for a guestimate of about £30 each but with 3 it still adds up to £90 and she doesn't want to spend money when in the end it turns out no one is interested, she can't sell it and it ends up going to WBAC anyway. The 2.3 seems really unloved , its neither very brisk nor economical and hence I've seen some lovely condition low mileage ones struggle 2-3 grand. As for the brakes well I can only go on what she's told me as I've never driven it. They might not need doing as I think she might be thinking that they do simply because the handbrake cable is a little slack.
It needed £700 worth of work doing last time and she's scared it's going to need the same again.

Time & Effort Vs Money.
WBAC will give you £1k for it.
Drive to WBAC and get a definite quote.
Drive to a few local cheap dealers and ask them to make you an offer.
Sell it to the highest bidder.
Get a lift home.
MOT will cost you £50, plus any fixing.
EBAY will cost you money to advertise plus the hassle of dealing with tyre kickers – or a weeks delay of no interest.
If it was me, I’d just get shot of it and move on.
