Car leasing/rent ideas please!

Obligations at work have got me coming back to the UK for a yet undisclosed time (though less than or equal to 6 months). "Yaaay!" I hear you say!
Anyway, I will be needing a car, as the workplace is in the arse-end of nowhere. Initially I was looking at buying something cheap-ish and fun (a'la MX-5) but it seems I may be staying for only as little as 4-6 weeks now, which makes the hassle of buying a car and then selling it again (not to mention getting insurance etc) a major pain in the backside.
So what I'm looking for are options! I've had a look at the major rental companies (Avis, Europcar, Hertz) and they all offer long-term rentals (>28 days). Currently waiting on some quotes from those guys.
Are there any schemes where you can rent/lease "older" cars?
