On the advice of the chap from Opie Oils, I (and a couple of other PHers) run this, but in the 10w-50. My 4.5 seems to like it
Same here - but may need a lighter oil after re-build.
Unless you do some serious track days or very aggressive road driving you really won't need anything more than a 40 in the AJP.
Monitor your oil temps, the cooler on the Cerb is so oversized that they over cool the oil.
Also, don't forget thicker oil does not always mean better protection, remember the old SOHC Vauxhall lump that ate its cam lobes if you put 20w50 in it as recommended by Vauxhall?
Personally I'd stick with Mobil 1 0w40 as in my OEM and race engine dyno testing experience there is little out there that outperforms it.

From reading elsewhere I have learnt the following which supports what I thought and what some of you have said:
A good quality 40 graded oil will pretty much cover you, even at higher operating temps so long as you choose a stable operating oil (good basestock) with good shear resistence. Pro S/Motul 300V/Millers CFS etc
10W-50 is also fine and perhaps ideal if you are doing more hardcore track work but doesnt have quite as good cold start protection.
As said going too thick can cause other problems and will increase friction so Im going to stick with 5W-40 for now.
I also read from oilman that Ester based oils are good to help reducing noise in tappety engines.
Millers CFS 5W-40 Fully Syn/Ester is on offer from opie and ticks all the boxes so think Im going to order that.

The reason for my choice is that my car has a history of overheating, and is only used for track days (as well as getting there and back), and is laid up over the winter. Also it has 1200ppm ZDDP.

I have six litres of Castrol EDGE 10W-60 at home from an M3 I used to own. I'm wondering if it would cause any harm to use this on the next service or if I'd be better selling it on ebay ?
You could use it for topups between oil changes without significantly changing the characteristics of your preferred oil.I am using a 5-30 Mobil oil at the moment. Oil pressure picks up quickly on cold start dropping to 40PSI on hot tickover. I have done a couple of track days with this oil now and all is well, oil PSI down to 30 at tickover when coming in after 40 mins on the track, 50PSI when running at 3000RPM.
In the owners book it says worry if oil pressure drops below 20PSI at 2000RPM so I am still well above that, nearer to 45PSI at 2000RPM and would rather have the flow rate high and slightly less pressure than the other way round.
The AJP is not an engine that tends to suffer from oil pressure problems anyway.

mine has always been run on this Cirvy did many track days with this car and its got a proven 412 bhp.....really sounds bad on cold start but sounds sweet when warm.Got to say i wont drive her as hard a cirvy did as she will not go on track.we have a tvr race team here in exeter who said this was a good choice.bud can you give any reason for comment as i am always keen to hear other views from longer term owners.

Engine dyno testing of exactly these 2 oils (Mobil 1 and Edge Sport) on the same engine, I also tested Mobil 1 and others against some oils specially blended by a large oil and fuel company. None of these could match Mobil 1 in performance stakes.
This was measured on a pretty accurate HBM torque flange in a VCA approved facility.

Right so should i change whats in her straight away because i always run the best oils i can put in my engines, not worried about performance as much as protection.like i said im not going to drive the s
t out of this car...just enjoy her on nice days out.am going to do my relief spring after chatsworth so would do an oil change then me thinks.Thanx for the advice bud...your never to old to learn
