i awoke this morning to a small puddle under the new diff after a run yesterday.....seems the diff breather is leaking as there is oil right on top of the diff.

please tell me it is possible to replace this with the diff in situ......

i wonder, filled whilst the car was level, but did use the fill level, not a measure.

it was fine on a gentle run, but has blown 20mm out after some spirited driving.

the breather wasnt loose, but did "wobble" a bit around the mushroom, so i wonder if it was damaged and is just leaking.

i have read a couple threads that say this blowing breather can happen with the btr. and have fitted some ....but ive not seen it on my last cars with btr diffs....

The 'bible' mentions that leaks can happen but if its only happened after a 'long and hard run' the problem may be leaks from the breather. This may be exacerbated if the breather is damaged, or shorter than standard which may prevent the oil vapour from condensing out in the tube. It suggests as one remedy to lengthen the pipe to allow this condensation to occur.

Reason I have this to hand is that I'm going to be changing the diff oil in my BTR diff probably this weekend and just wanted to see if there was any relevant info in the book.

i did recall when i fitted the diff that the breather didn't feel like the "mushroom" was held on very tight, it was pretty wobbly. so have now assumed it might just have taken a knock, and is now non functioning and leaking

john at grantura has them in stock, £20 or so, so i will get a replacement, and perhaps fit that onto a length of pipe as has been done by some folk

Hi Marti. I think I am a bit dim! Where is the diff breather located on my BTR? I can not see it from underneath. ThaNKS.

Hi SSPPGG, my reconditioned GKN diff done exactly the same for a while after I refitted it. I did put the oil in before fitting, knowing what a pain it would be, though I made sure it was blocked up level it is not a precise science, so put the slight drips down to the oil finding its right level. All the best, Pete

Here is a picture of my BTR diff out my Cerb you can just see the breather on the right hand side.

I think i have the same issue with mine losing a little oil after the first few drives. I am hoping it is just settling down and i have not damaged the breather as well. Mine moves around quite loose as well.

after 1000 miles. im still getting a little drip from the breather, but much less than before, sugesting either the diff is dry, or the diff has given up spitting out spare oil....I'm hoping the latter

Mine did the same a small amount even after a few hundred miles. I found the culprit when checking the level! Oil level was fine right up to hole edge, but, under pressure a small amount of oil was leaking through the threads of the filler plug! So, before replacing plug I wound a length of PTFE tape around threads, then tightened plug, end of leak!
