I know many owners remove the pre-cats on their cars to enhance the noise, however I have been informed that at least some cars left the factory without having these fitted at all. These cars were registered in Jersey as a way around the laws of the time. It was part of an official arrangement that TVR had with the government. What I’m trying to find out is –

How many of these cars were there?
Which models were included?
And how many are there left on the road?

Any information will be gratefully received.

From what I can tell in 1996 TVR setup a sales franchise in Jersey through JS Cars in St Helier. This meant that due to the emission laws at the time cars supplied to Jersey could be built in the Blackpool factory without catalytic converters - creating a unique V8 rumble as it should be, rather than being muted! Of the 100 or so TVR's supplied to Jersey a handful were promptly imported back to the UK - creating a small selection of unique cars that legally have no emission requirements for MOT

Hi,

Sorry for the delay as I just found this post - must have missed it at the time!
I have a Jersey registered Chim, and was told the story about it being 'promptly re-imported' - but the paperwork suggests that the car spent 3 years in Jersey and was imported into the UK in '99.
It's an N reg (96) Rosso Red 4.0L which has a letter with it, from TVR, stating there are no catalytic converters fitted as the car was supplied for Jersey where there are/were no emission requirements.

Soooo .....

Given that TVR is no-more, what's to stop someone creating a similar letter to show an MOT Tester for a car that's been de-catted.

Could they check the validity of the letter?

Apart from committing a crime, nothing much I guess.

I did that a few years ago, it said that TVR had fitted an earlier "performance" engine to my 95 car.

Tester gave it the No cat test.

Can they see the results of the previous year's MOT emissions test I wonder?

Probably can recall the details of the previous MOT now but I didn't think that the actual results of the emissions test itself were saved...

Not sure if it’s much help 8 years later but I think I had one of the last Tvr’s in jersey. A 97 cerbera that J.S cars bought as a demo. I brought it back into England in 2019.

I fitted the cats for the MOT as I was told there is no exemption for jersey cars
