Charity karter breaks world endurance record

Endurance karter 'accidentally' breaks a world record - two years after the event

A kart racer from Borehamwood has unexpectedly found himself the holder of a Guinness World Record for the longest distance set on an outdoor track by an individual.

Howard Kayman undertook the challenge back in summer 2010 at the Teeside Karting Circuit in Middlesborough simply to raise £10,000 for Help for Heroes.

'I've got to spend 1,000 miles in this!?'
'I've got to spend 1,000 miles in this!?'
Howard completed 1,054.4 miles in the 24-hour period, an average speed of 43.9mph. To put that into perspective, the winning team (as in more than one driver) last 24-hour kart race on the Circuit Alain Prost at Le Mans managed just 1,055 miles in the same time.

It's a pretty impressive achievement, we think you'll agree, but even more so when you consider Howard beat the previous record by more than 200 miles.

"I only found out last week after a friend of mine was looking at the records and said that I had beaten them, I didn't believe it until I investigated further and he was correct," he says. "I didn't go out to try and break the record at all; my main aim was to raise as much money as possible for the charity."

After getting in touch with Guinness World Records, Howard now has an official certificate to confirm his record. Quite something to hang in the downstairs loo, we'd say...

+1 this. I visit the gym more than I should, I ride motocross which is intense, but 24 hours in a kart? Damn.

That really is impressive, well done that man. A well deserved reward for such a cause-worthy effort too.

Stunning.

What motor did he use? Never saw a motor in a kart last that long.

I was racing in the same race and gave him a thumbs up everytime I passed him. A true legend and I couldn't believe he was smiling and looking good at the end. I expect you to nail your next record attempt Howard!

I did a kart session at Teesside a couple of weeks ago. After 15 minutes my spine was shattered, my ribs were so bruised you could see the bumps through my shirt and my fingers were so ruined i could hardly grip the steering wheel on my drive home. My brain cannot fathom how this blokes body was able to withstand the punishment of 24 hours!

I raised just under £10,000....

Next, looking into the 48hr record...

It was a pro-kart, the kart held up really well apart from one engine change after it went bang....The guys at Teesside were excellent...

Was doing stints of 2/2.5hrs - the atmosphere was just great and as previous replies, the thumbs up from all the other teams really helped...

Cheers
