Road Rage solutions
Discussion
My driving is of such a high standard I never have road rage directed against me.
Ok, so you want the truth? Actually I do try hard to avoid any confrontation, but sometimes you get an unstable individual who sees you overtaking as some kind of personal insult. I've even had numptys deliberatly pulling out as I overtook to try and either kill me or stop me getting past. However, as yet I've not had anyone try to physicaly assault me, so I don't know how I'd respond. Not afarid of defending myself though.

I ask because I've dealt with dozens of such cases and several of which have involved some serious injuries to the 'victims.'
We, especially us fellas, always like to think we can handle ourselves and our metal boxes ie Cars, sometime overcompensate for any weaknesses we might have...
You just never know who is in the other car or what their state of mind is....
Serious stuff...

I now drive a big 4x4 in order to "diffuse" situations. I have had enough of arrogant people that try to deliberately crash into my nice shiney sportscar... bit grim actually, but I have been through hell defending my good name after some drunken @rse deliberately crashed into my car and then went mental on me, forcing me to defend myself. Yeah that was so funny mate... more on this topic later.

Personally I give people the full eye contact treatment and usually say "sorry" or a hand gesture to indicate "sorry". Its just not worth it getting into an argument and for the sake of admitting you are wrong to a stranger (even though you arent) is fine.... I dont care...
I have had a few road rage incidents and its never got out of control yet. But thats not to say that it still couldnt. I have also had the misfortune of seeing plenty of such incidents too..... some of them have been frightening!!!
Edited to add:
Oh, and should it get really scarey and there is nothing that I can do, I will pull off the road and take an alternative way to where I am going to... satnav will sort me out and there shouldnt be a problem.... I just remind myself that road-ragers are usually some neddle-dicked napoloen-complex middle-ages misserable-tosser who has to resort to hiding behind some metal doors to assert himself - because he wouldnt be able to do it in public....
Oh, and for the brain-doctors out there, thats a fair conclusion for the majority of serial road-ragers at least....

Depends on the situation. Have in the past stopped the vehicle, got out, walked to the offending mouth-piece and er "quietened" them.
Takes a bit more to get me to react nowadays (heck im a mellow old thing
) but occasionally something comes along to stir it up.
Mostly something said, along the lines of " Do you really want my boot in your mouth" is sufficient, but like i said, its rare and not the norm at all.
Tend to just shout at em to "feck orf" or let it go, in any case if theyre gonna push for it, and try and impose on me, then thats their choice and their problem will be then be me....
Dont want trouble, and dont go looking for it, just want a quiet life and to be left in peace.

Having had a couple of minor rage incedents directed at me in the past, and hearing what can result from these I, as others here have said, avoid these situations as much as possible.
e.g comming home tonight I was driving home on the m4 in the 3rd lane and overtaking those in the middle lane continously, see large 4x4 looming in my mirrors at a fairly high velocity (I wasn't exactly slow you understand), he starts to tailgate me and starts flashing (I was still overtaking and pulling in would mean me slowing down a fair chunk).
In my younger past I would have either brake tested him or slowed down to match those I was overtaking but instead I pulled in as soon as and slowed down, let him pass, pulled back out and carried on.
He was less stressed (proved his manhood no doubt
) and I continued home relaxed and safe.
Cheers

Humour or aggression, depends on my mood. Although I have to say that when out in the truck, defensive driving is the order of the day, so incidents which may provoke road rage are few and far between.
However, heres one from a few years back:
Had a close call with a car tucking itself into my nearside blind spot, consequently almost hit it but not quite. Bloke was flashing his headlamps like a loony, so I stopped and walked back, thinking that perhaps contact had been made after all. He got out with big stick! Me - "You`re going to need that stick in a minute". Him - "Why?". Me "To prise that piece of junk from between the treads of my tyres.....now FECK OFF!" Worked for me.

Come and live in Hungary, road rage is just about non-existent. Standard of driving is god-awful but everybody lets all the aggressive overtakers/wrong laners/pushers in/you name it do their thing and nobody gets het up (except me who slags off all the people letting the t s in
)
Road-rage is non-existant in Hungary because:
A)Most people don't have cars
B)Most people have guns so don't F
ck with them (unless you have a gun of you're own)Had a road rage incident last week, white van man lost the plot starky and hutched my 4X4 to stop he and his mate jumped out to thump me .....
Unfortunately I was carrying 3 members of my rugby team, 6'6 19 stone 6'9 21stone 6'3 18stone and me 6'1 19 stone. Never seen 2 artisans apologising so fast
You should have seen their faces when Dave 6'9 just kept saying "Lets give em a good spanking !!"

A couple of years ago i was subject to a bit of Roadrage which went something like this-:
I had finished work on a nice and hot Sunday afternoon at about 2pm. I was on my brand new Motorbike (not yet run in with 100 miles on the clock) and was travelling along the North Circ Road.
I was dong the limit of 40mph in the outside lane of 3 at this point with vehicles all around. My attention was drawn to a Grey Renault Clio which was about a meter from my back wheel(literally).
It was a car full of young Asians aged about 17/18. I couldnt believe that they were so close to me so i found a gap and pulled over into lane 2. At this, the Clio overtook me, pulled into lane 2 and slammed on its brakes, making me effectively do an emergency stop.
The Clio pulled away slowly and played cat and mouse with me along the road. All other vehicles were hanging back and i was hoping that someone would call the Police(which they never did).
I tried to memorise the index of the vehicle as this was unfolding.
Everytime i tried to overtake/undertake, the Clio was forcing me off the road and into the kerb. I was concerned because for some reason, he wanted to cause me injury and damage to my nice new bike. I did think about stopping but i knew from his actions that he would have reversed over my bike, it was a terrifying experience but was about to get much worse.
I had a mobile phone with me but sadly, it was in my pocket and im unable to use it....i was relying on one of the other vehicles to come to my aid and call the Police.
As i approached Staples Corner, we both went down the slip road to the M1 at about 15mph, he was still swerving over the road.
I noticed in front of me there was a line of stationary traffic and saw this as my chance to get past this nutter.
As i did so, his arm came out of the window and he was waving a 3ft metal bar in my direction which im pleased to say, i managed to avoid.
I then sped off up the M1 but in my haste and with everything that had gone on for the previous few mins,it had caused me to forget the one thing that would enable me to get some retribution.....his index.
It was at that point that i was hoping that some other motorist had had the decency to call Police with the full details of the incident.
After spending a considerable amount of time trying to trace this car, the result was less than satisfactory and effectively, this person had got away with a serious offence.
I will, never forget this experience and as a result iam extremely sympathetic to drivers who are subject to this type of abuse and the guilty party can expect no mercy from me.
Upon reflection, i was extremely lucky not to have been injured or my bike damaged and it goes to show that nobody is imune from this type of incident.

A couple of times I have had trucks seriously tailgating me in single lane motorway roadworks.
I waited until near the end of the restriction and very gently slowed down to about 5mph and then, as the road in front of me was now empty, nailed it.
By the time the truck left the roadworks, I was a dot in the distance.
The agro he got off the other drivers as they finally got past the truck must have been amusing.....

Tony,
nasty story that one.
Same sort of thing happened to a traffic inspector mate of mine only a few months ago. Everything the same; he was on a motorbike, car full of scum etc..(minus the metal bar)
Index/VRM remembered and a Sergeant later visited the keeper of the car, who admitted being the driver, but denied any swerving, emergency stops etc.
Ended up at the big shop (crown court)...6 points and a few hundred pounds fine to the scumbag driver..
A better ending, eh?
Stay safe,
