VW Transporters . . What’s all the fuss about??

Loads of people I speak to lately seem to lust after one and are willing to pay over £20k for a ‘sorted’ one!?
I personally don’t see the attraction as, in the grand scheme of things isn’t it just a van/minibus? You could pay a lot less for example, a bigger Transit and kit it out just as well for less than what some of the ‘basic’ ones seem to fetch.
I don’t quite get what I’m obviously missing about them?

I have to admit they are far better looking than a Transit though.
A good friend has just upgraded his from a 57 plate to the new shape 60 plate van.
He's also aquired nearly new mercedes leather/electric seats and base swivels and panel glass. A set of alloys and colour coding the bumpers are next.

Excellent for Dogging but not a patch on a Ford Galaxy for most things, it is a van after all, it is just the extra seats and luggage capacity that sell it, usually for airport taxis.

Out of people I know who've driven both I don't know many who prefer the VW. Transit IME has more feelsome handling by far, a more positive gearshift, better brakes and brakefeel and is more wieldy when approaching its limits - the VW tended to want to just understeer and felt numb by comparison. Quality was no better either and if anything was less quirky. I also favoured the Transit's seats and all round ergonomics. Pistonheads: driving vans on the limit matters.

Lol. You threw me for a second, ‘rally-painted Focus pic on your profile’, so much so that i had to go look. Its not painted, thats about 10km worth of stage mud splattered down the side, it rained heavy before i took the pic so looks cleaner than it usually does!Its mainly local stuff i marshal, but every so often we go further afield for a jolly.
Rally GB is the priority one though, i’ve had my week of Annual Leave booked for this year’s event since the Calendar was released, the mrs isn’t happy as it clashes with her parents 30th Anniversary dinner or something, i’ve told her i’ll see what i can do . . . . . . (what i can do is be keeping my WRGB commitment, she will find out closer to the date

I have driven both - in fact far more miles in a Transit than a Transporter. I like the Transit and in bare van form, I don't think the VW has much over one but the gearbox is crushingly superior in the Dub, the engines are more modern ( we also had a Defender with a Transit engine for a year) and efficient and they are definitely better built. Ours is a long way from a "van" so isn't really any comparison unless Ford secretly make a 4WD Transit camper van.
Fozzy - I actually see where you are coming from. I am yet to see the attraction of fitting 20" rims, loads of chrome. a bonnet "bra" and all the other bits that seem to be the norm on any Transporter. Ours will remain mod free externally. It's basically a van, not a sports tourer.

Also forgot to ad, i drive a Mercedes Vito 7seater as a Taxi on Saturday nights, which i’m told is the Merc equivalent to the VW. Imho the Merc is a decent enough drive, tho it has a really short rev range, and being RWD is practically useless in cold/icy/slippy conditions. The TC does nothing but make pretty flashing lights on my dashboard as opposed to actually stopping the van from skidding/sliding. even when seating 6 large lads in the back!
