Morning all,

Will there be much difference in running costs between a 987 Boxster 2.7 and a 996 carrera 3.6? Assume a purchase price of around £15k.

Thanks in advance

Not huge - but in general the 911 will cost more. Of course at that price point, the 996 is going to be older than the Boxster and therefore more might be needed for "wear and tear" items unless they've already been done!

Thanks for the replies. I’m considering an early 987 Boxster 2.7 or a 996 as a daily driver covering around 14,000 miles per year. To be honest I’m leaning towards the Boxster as I don’t need 4 seats, like convertibles, prefer the interior, and I feel the Boxster is more of a sportscar than the 996. I have read all about the engine issues with these cars and have decided that if I do get one I’ll not bother with a warranty but I will put aside a war chest / repair fund in case of any major issues that may occur. The question is, how much? My initial thoughts were £3k but it now seems more sensible to go for a slightly older, higher mileage car and hold a £5k repair fund. This will leave around £12.5-13K for the car. The car will be serviced and maintained by a local Porsche specialist.

Any thoughts?

I think that a proper engine rebuild with a well known specialist will be in the region of £7k, so strictly speaking this would be what is safe to put away. Having said that, its unlikely that the engine will let go, certainly in the first few months which, if you buy the car from a good specialist, would anyways likely be covered by the vendor. So starting with £5k should be ok and then just build it up, at least 'mentally'.
