Im in the process of going through my yearly career development discussion, just had a curious suggestion from my boss.

Due to a major project im working on he would like to change all my goals from last year retrospectively to reflect my work on this project, now for me this doesnt sit well and ive pushed back on the idea.

But thinking about it if im to sell myself in this document than really I should have gone along with it no matter how distasteful I feel it is fitting last years goals around the accomplishments ive made.

I just wondered what the gentle people of PH's opinions were on this subject?

Are last years goals relevent to the work you've been engaged on for the last year?

The major project is just another project in my eyes, even though it is a major thing for the company & has a budget of around £20m. I continually work on lots of big and small projects.

Yes, I believe that I have completed 3 of the 5 with 1 being a continual goal that rolls over each year but ive not got as much done on it as I would have liked due to the project and the other is an admin project that ive started but isnt complete.

kep the goals for projects you've completed, write restrospective ones for goals on this new project you have achieved / will achieve.

i know it's pointless, but also mention this to your boss. i did to mine and he agreed. we now have quarterly mini appraisals instead of one big one which allows for better progress tracking and changing targets mid-year.

I was once given a team of 12 to manage and had to complete all their appraisals with two weeks. After that, I'd do a mini one for one person a week. Far less hassle, everyone was always up to date without me ever panicking about it. I couldn't imagine setting someones targets for a year and not looking at them for twelve months, very few roles are that stable and even if they are then people deserve feedback and encouragement more often.

OP, go along with your boss, make his life easy and make sure that he knows that you know that you're both just playing the game.

A frank conversation with the boss required. On the face of it, it sounds like he is tailoring your goals to show, on paper, that you have met the goals set over the past year. Leaving them as they are may mean you miss out on bonus or payrise if you have missed too many?

Sounds like he's trying to do you a favour. And you in turn are doing him a favour, because it them shows that he has been "managing" you correctly, to deliver all the goals set.

If last year's "paper" goals match last year's actual work delivered, that's usually a good thing in the world of HR.
