Looking to purchase myself my first tube of chamois cream to help during some of my longer rides and wondered if anyone had any preferences as to what does and doesnt work. I know we are all different but your thoughts and experiences would help me in my choice of lubrication...

Wasn't this done recently?

Chamois Butt'r is nice. I've not exceeded about 40 miles on it though, so might not be the best person to ask.

I've never used Chamois Cream, and am about to do 100 miles a day for 9 days. (I have done long distance rides before, just never with Chamois Cream.)

I would appreciate an honest, no bullst explanation of exactly how to use it, and why.

(I will also appreciate the humourous answers too, but it would be handy if I could tell the difference!)

I don't use chamois cream but then I don't suffer from chafing. No point applying a fix if the problem doesn't exist biggrin

Assos. its only £12 per tub but I would happily pay triple that for it. you dont need much, it keeps pads supple and your man-bits comfy. its not greasy, its not oily, its just brilliant...

How: Just massage it into the pad of your shorts after they have been washed and then again just before you go riding. Its that simple.

Why: keeps the pads supple which allows it to flex and move a lot easier, protects against bacteria growth, forms a micro thin layer of lubricant between your body and the pad. smells nice. stops you having to adjust your tackle mid ride (though i appreciate for some this is a highlight of a ride)

It's worth using for long rides in wet conditions. Otherwise I don't bother. Actually, since I try and avoid long wet rides I haven't used it in years. Must HTFU.

on a well known cycling shops site I see the description for ASSOS chamois cream states its not to be applied to intimate areas, I thought that was the whole point of it to stop chaffing and rubbing in your saddle area???

Two little tips from me - use some bog roll to apply it as it saves having to wash your hands, and if there's a chance of you riding abroad then get some Sportique Century cream in a 100ml tube which you can take on a plane.

Maybe they're trying to discourage "intimate" uses of it.

the clue is in the title "chamois cream" not "crack cream" you apply it to the chamois not your body. as i said, you rub it into the pad, not onto your body. it prevents chaffing and saddle sores by keeping the pad supple and moving with your body. its not designed as lubricant as such.

The Assos cream is to apply to the body. It says to apply to the pad if applying on the body is not sufficient. It says avoid mucous membranes.
