My current weekend/sunny day runabout is a 1999 230 slk which I have to say I enjoy very much despite reading some of the negative posts here regarding slk,s.
However despite our old bus being fine and causing us no bother I am beginning to feel that I fancy a change.....at first I was just going to go for a newer slk, maybe a 280 or possibly a 350......I know that sounds a bit dull but I like them and my wife uses the merc sometimes and she enjoys it too...anyway I noticed that boxsters had slipped into the sub 10 k bracket..and it made me think. I don,t know much about them so would welcome some advice....I have to be honest the fabric roof puts me off a bit as its going to live outside..( garage is full)..but I,m sure they are made to cope.
Its not just about performance for me but the whole ownership experience..ie....reliability, value for money, resale, driving pleasure.... anyway your thoughts would be welcome....

So I guess by posting in to the Merc forum you want us to back the SLK and tell you to leave the Boxster - rather than you posting into the Porsche forums and want assistance the other way around.

I'm obviously a Merc fan - done deal. But I would love my SLK roof to work as fast as a Boxster seems to (not an expert though). On the opposite side watched a Boxster guy messing around stopping mid cycle to make sure the rear window was creasing properly to extend its life. The metal roof wins here. A nearby serial Porsche fan keeps their Boxster outside all the time with no complaint. Personally I won't keep either of my Mercs outside - but Mrs Mercs Jazz takes what is thrown at it.

Follow your heart, but buy the right car - spec, condition, history, warranty. That will guarantee long term happiness.

What about a different Merc. An older R129 SL - with Hard Roof for winter. CLK for flexibility.

Thanks for the response......perhaps I should of posted in the porsche forum but I just did,nt think to be honest. I would like to keep our play car in the garage but its just to full and so it lives under a cover....the bodywork is good and not got the usual rust problems of older slk,s.......I guess I,m going to have to do some research on the boxter and maybe go and look at a couple....
