Start off with a good remap, should set you back £200 - £400 depending where you go and you can get some pretty impressive power gains.

Why not it's very affective.Diesel tuning is all about getting as much fuel into the motor and not melting anything. So maps work well as an increased boost. Bigger intercooler to keep the AIT's down and bigger exhaust to try and reduce EGT's.
Bigger turbo's, head work and cams are all further tuning options too, but evidently add cost and complexity.
Other options then come from running propane kits and/or nitrous oxide. Try YouTube and find the vid where Fifth Gear added Nitrous to a Golf and very nearly upset a Honda NSX. If you speak to the guys at Wizards of Nos they'll tell you the article was slightly fluffed and it was a lower spec car to start with and they wouldn't do all the mods, if they had chances are it would be been even quicker again.

Such a change would be a far bigger leap than what you've just described.

How can you sort them when you don't know?What if it's a standard car and they drive too quickly and it's hot out, the brakes might still fade.... same result as you've just described.

I remapped my Saab 9-3 and it gained nearly 40 bhp (210 to 250) and the standard setup coped admirably, the brakes were epic before and were still so with the additional power, never saw any fade. The suspension coped though I did put some Eibach springs on due to one cracking but I dotn think that was power related, just a common fault so to me the having to uprate everything argument is slightly out of date and does depends to a certain extent on the specific car, modern cars tend to be better endowed in terms of brakes and suspension, my older cars tended to be marginal under braking at standard power outputs, Mantas, Capri's, Mk1 Golf's but now the braking hardware is way way more powerful relative to the performance, ditto wheels and tyres and the suspension, if in good order and at the higher end of the manufacturers range is usually up to the job, pretty much everything has anti roll bars nowadays which didnt use to be the case.
Also, and this might not be a very popular response but most cars nowadays have some form of Stability control to keep the ham fisted driver a bit safer than they would have been in the past.
So, my thinking is most modern cars will cope with a hike in power, it is the driver that really needs uprating most of the time.

When researching into upgrading one of our cars, I was always hit with the same advice - get brakes and suspension sorted first. You don't think that's a good doctrine?

k about with charge cooling and exhausts but ultimately why bother? The chassis can't really handle the 190bhp and the clutch can't handle the torque. An aggressive remap is enough given the capabilities of the rest of the car IMO.
